University of Limerick football manager David Power says it’s “a joy to be coaching” teams under the new rules.
2026 sees Power involved with UL, the Tipperary ladies football side and the High School Clonmel team, steering the former to Sigerson Cup glory last week as they defeated UCC at Croke Park to record their college’s maiden success in the prestigious competition.
Speaking on TippFM Sport’s Extra Time programme this week, Power, who steered Tipp to a historic Munster SFC triumph in 2020, says he’s delighted to be managing again.
“Gaelic football has transformed again and it’s a joy to be coaching and to be managing again because believe me before these new rules it was tough,” he said.
“It was tough because, unfortunately, you have to go with the norm and with the norm back then was all this defensive football and it wasn’t nice and it wasn’t nice to manage and coach either and even from the players perspective, it wasn’t nice to be playing.
“I think if it had kept going you were probably going to be losing players over it.”
