Ben O’Carroll struck for 1-8 as St Brigid’s dealt Roscommon Gaels an emphatic 1-18 to 1-7 defeat in Ballyforan last night to progress to the semi-finals of the Roscommon senior football championship.

A decent start from the 2023 champions running up a three-point lead thanks to the scores of O’Carroll and Bobby Nugent before John McGuinness’s 14th minute goal brought the sides level.

Last year’s runners up got ahead for the first time thanks to Peter Gillooly’s point on 19 minutes, but more scores via O’Carroll and Nugent at the other end saw the Saints edging a 0-6 to 1-2 half-time lead.

The second-half saw St Brigid’s pulling clear with scores from O’Carroll (2), Shane Cunnane, Eoghan Derwin and Nugent, leaving the Gaels to try and play catch up in the closing quarter.

The margin stood at nine points when O’Carroll sent in the game’s only goal late on as Anthony Cunningham’s men comfortably advanced.

Meanwhile, Western Gaels retained their Roscommon SFC status thanks to a 1-10 to 0-9 win over St Dominic's who will be playing their championship football in the intermediate ranks next season.
