Westmeath manager Mark McHugh says his side were beaten by the better team in Monaghan on Sunday afternoon.

The Farney men emerged victorious on a 1-28 to 2-19 scoreline in Clones, where Jack McCarron netted the hosts’ goal, to advance to the All-Ireland SFC quarter-finals where they now face Louth on Sunday at Croke Park (1.45pm).

Speaking after his side’s defeat, McHugh had no complaints and said that the Lake men had experienced “an awesome year” which included a first Leinster title for the county in 22 years.

"We don’t like losing, but unfortunately someone has to lose," he told RTÉ Sport.

"The better team won, there is no doubt about that. Once we settle down and reflect on the year, yes it will be an awesome year.

“What we have done for the young people of Westmeath, who will hopefully want to wear this jersey, that is what it’s all about.

"Our job as a management team is to improve standards and quality of football, and thankfully we did that this year. But it’s only the start."
