Just a week after the final score of the All-Ireland SHC semi-final between Tipperary and Kilkenny was shrouded in confusion, another score controversy surfaced in Laois at the weekend.
The SHC Round 1 clash between Portlaoise and Camross at Laois Hire O’Moore Park on Sunday ended in confusion when referee Brian Farrell had ‘The Town’ winning by a point, 2-22 to 5-12. However, following a review by Laois GAA, it was later clarified that the game actually ended in a draw, 2-22 to 5-13.
The confusion arose after the second water break when the referee instructed officials to remove one of Camross’ points. That left the scoreboard reading 4-11 to 0-15 instead of 4-12 to 0-15. Two goals from John Mark Foley in the final quarter rescued a draw for Portlaoise, who initially thought they had won by a point.
