Tipperary hurling great John ‘Bubbles’ O’Dwyer has expressed delight at winning his first club championship medal with his beloved Killenaule.
The 35-year-old won the Liam MacCarthy Cup twice with Tipp in 2016 and ‘19, but has had to wait until now to taste championship success at club level. What’s even more surprising is that it came with the Killenaule footballers after they defeated Golden/Kilfeacle by 2-11 to 0-14 in yesterday’s county IFC final.
Lining out in goals, ‘Bubbles’ kicked a two-point free in the first half, just a week after coaching Fethard to their first Tipperary JHC ‘A’ title in 76 years.
“That's my first adult county medal with the club. I've played senior hurling or premier intermediate hurling for 19 years, or football for 17,” he told Tipp FM.
“It can't be underestimated how massive it is. There's a couple of young lads in there and that's their first or second year. I'm waiting 19 years, they're winning it in year one or year two. What can they go on and do now? That's the big thing for the club.
“This isn't about me, this is about the young lads coming through and showing the development and work that's going on in the club.
“We're just delighted. We're going to enjoy ourselves tonight and tomorrow.”
