University of Limerick will face Immaculate College Limerick in Friday week’s Fitzgibbon Cup final after both sides came through their respective semi-finals last night.
Holders UL were 0-18 to 1-13 winners over University of Galway at Maguires Field where late points from Adam Screeney and Darragh McCarthy helped to get the star-studded hosts over the line.
Darragh Neary’s goal inside the opening 20 seconds had given University of Galway the perfect start, but they’d trail by 0-11 to 1-3 come the break as Screeney, McCarthy and Jack O’Neill pointed at the other end for Brian Ryan’s men.
The frees of Liam Hoare brough the Galway students right back into contention in the second-half ahead of Jack Leahy and O’Neill landing points which were backed up by Screeney and McCarthy’s scores down the home stretch.
The other semi-final saw 2024 champions Mary I battling past DCU at St Clare’s, where it finished 0-31 to 2-16 after extra time.
It was the home side that led by 1-7 to 0-8 at the halfway stage, with Peter Clarke firing in their goal, and the same man would net again late on to help force extra time as the scores of Shane Walsh, who finished with 0-13, and Cian Scully looked to get Mary I over the line.
The Limerick students ruled the roost in the added periods, outscoring their opponents by 0-11 to 0-2 as DCU were reduced to 14 late on with the dismissal of Paidi Lennon.
