Galway picked up their second win of this year’s Connacht U20 football championship campaign by handing Leitrim a 2-11 to 0-11 defeat in Carrick-on-Shannon on Wednesday evening.
It was the hosts that had led by 0-6 to 0-4 before Galway struck their first goal via Matthew Collins in the 25th minute and Ciaran Mulhern bagged another one for the Tribesmen before half-time as they took in a 2-5 to 0-6 lead.
Ross Coen put half a dozen between the sides a minute into the resumption and the visitors would stretch their advantage further with singles from their two goal scorers.
Jack Kelly and Eanna McNamara pulled back points for Leitrim but it wouldn’t be enough, as Eoinin O Cualain rounded off Galway’s tally before full-forward Paul Honeyman was dismissed for the hosts on a black card late on.
In Ballyforan, Roscommon bounced back from their opening round defeat to Galway last week by dealing Sligo a 2-19 to 0-15 defeat.
After slow start saw them trailing by eight points 20 minutes in, the Rossies fired in their goals via Colin Murray and Eoin Collins either side of half-time to bring themselves right back into contention.
John Curran, Charlie O’Carroll (one free and one two-pointer) and Murray sent over the scores that brought the home side level by the 36th minute and, from there, more points from beyond the arc by Conor Grogan and O’Carroll put the hosts in control.
Eli Rooney (free) landed Sligo’s last point in the 49th minute as O’Carroll, John McGuinness and Eoghan Carthy raised white flags at the other end before O’Carroll, who tallied 0-9 in total, rounded off the Rossies’ tally with his third two-pointer of the evening.
