Kilcoo's historic reign ends as Burren reach Down SFC final

Burren produced a stunning performance to end Kilcoo’s remarkable reign in the Down senior football championship, winning a thrilling contest by 4-16 to 1-20 at Pairc Esler this evening.

Kilcoo had been chasing an eighth consecutive SFC title (and 14th in 15 years) in the Mourne County, but their extraordinary run came to an end against the 2018 champions.

Burren made the perfect start, with Odhran Murdock converting two penalties inside the opening quarter. Kilcoo responded through an Anthony Morgan goal to take in a 1-9 to 2-5 lead at half-time.

The Magpies pushed further ahead after the restart, but Niall Toner’s goal brought Burren level and set-up a dramatic final quarter.

Liam Kerr was influential for Burren as the sides traded scores, before Ryan Treanor produced the decisive moment late on. The son of club legend John ‘Shorty’ Treanor fired home Burren’s fourth goal to secure the famous victory.

Burren now face Clonduff in a derby final, after the Hilltown side defeated Carryduff 2-14 to 1-13 on Friday night.
