Eight in-a-row chasing Kilcoo suffered their first Down SFC defeat since 2020 at the hands of Carryduff yesterday.

In what was a repeat of last year's county final which the Magpies won by six points, Joe McFlynn fired 2-9 as Carryduff exacted revenge with a thrilling 2-15 to 2-13 Round 2A victory. It means that the long-time champions will have to progress to the quarter-finals via Round 3 next weekend.

Facile first round wins over Drumgath, Kilcoo opened the scoring through a Shealan Johnston two-pointer. Ryan McEvoy and Sean Óg McCusker added goals, but McFlynn's first major ensured Carryduff were within touching distance at the break.

McFlynn's second goal helped the south Belfast men to a five-point lead coming down the home stretch, but the holders narrowed the gap to three before missing the chance to force extra-time when McCusker's injury-time penalty was deflected over the bar by Carryduff 'keeper Ronan Laverty.

In yesterday's other Round 2A encounter, Mayobridge overcame Ballyholland on a 1-19 to 2-12 scoreline.
