University of Limerick will play UCC in the Sigerson Cup final next Wednesday at Croke Park (7.35pm) after coming through an epic semi-final against Queen’s University, Belfast last night.
It finished 3-23 to 2-21 at the GAA National Games Development Centre in Abbotstown, where Cathal Brosnan’s terrific late goal forced extra time for the Limerick students and they’d go on to win by five points to set-up a repeat of this competition’s 2023 decider.
Cian McHale, who finished with 1-8 to his name, struck a 22nd minute goal which saw UL towards a 1-7 to 0-6 lead at half-time in normal time before Queen’s hit the first four scores of the second-half to storm in front.
Frank Irwin’s two-pointer from a free nudged UL ahead again and they’d hit the net through Tommy Walsh in the 43rd minute, but their Belfast counterparts rallied again and points via Conall Higgins (2), Noah Grimes, Ronan Cassidy (free) and Donal Scullion would bring them level before they hit the jackpot.
Ryan McQuillan tucked away a 56th minute goal which made it 1-17 to 2-11 and Conor O’Neill added a two-pointer which saw them with one foot in the final before Conal Dawson’s long-range effort at the other end was backed up by Brosnan hitting the top corner of the Queen’s net in the fifth minute of injury-time.
That sent the game to extra time where UL would land the first three points to regain control and more scores from McHale (2), Michael Freaney, Ciaran Collins and David Buckley saw them over the line.
TweetCathal Brosnan at the death. Keeps @ul_gaa in the Sigerson Cup and sends it to extra-time.
