UCC moved into the Sigerson Cup final thanks to a hard-fought 1-11 to 1-8 win against University of Galway at the Mardyke last night.

Ruairí Murphy’s goal six minutes in set the tone for the Cork students who would see their three-point lead wiped out after Eoin Colleran hit their net midway through the first-half.

Mark McInerney’s two-pointer moved University of Galway in front for the first time before Conor Daly responded at the other end to leave it all square at half-time (1-4 to 1-4).

Michael McSweeney and Daly (free) struck early second-half scores for UCC and three points in-a-row from Cormac Dillion would edge them closer to the final.

Canice Mulligan ended a 23-minute second-half scoring drought for the Galway students and McInerney kept the heat on UCC with a late two-pointer, but the 24-time champions held out to book their place in the decider next Wednesday at Croke Park (7.35pm).

Last night’s other semi-final between Queen’s University, Belfast and UL was postponed as a result of the orange weather warning in Dublin.

That game is now scheduled to go ahead at 6pm this evening on the grass pitch at the NGDC Abbotstown.
