Sligo and Wexford progressed to the quarter-finals of the Tailteann Cup following respective victories over Carlow and Antrim this afternoon.
The preliminary quarter-final clash in Tubbercurry saw Sligo holding off Carlow for a 1-27 to 2-19 win to put their name in the hat for tomorrow morning’s draw along with Offaly and Westmeath who won yesterday.
The hosts’ electric start saw them running up a 0-9 to 0-2 lead after the opening 15 minutes and, while their Leinster counterparts clawed their deficit back to three points, an Alan McLoughlin goal helped the Yeats men to move towards a 1-15 to 0-13 half-time lead.
The opening 10 minutes of the second-half saw Carlow hitting the net twice through Paddy McDonnell, with the latter strike making it 1-17 to 2-13, but Tony McEntee’s side steadied the ship with points by Alan Reilly, Canice Mulligan, Shane Deignan and Patrick O’Connor.
Scores from Darragh Foley (free) and John Phiri kept the visitors in the hunt right until the end, but they’d finish up five short as Sligo advanced.
Sean Nolan hit the net twice as Wexford inflicted a 5-23 to 2-21 defeat on Antrim at Chadwicks Wexford Park.
The Model men had been 0-8 to 0-4 in front when Nolan fired in their first goal in the 22nd minute and another from Ben Brosnan on the stroke of half-time saw the hosts go in with a commanding 2-14 to 0-7 advantage.
Nolan and Mark Rossiter raised more green flags for Wexford after the change of ends, with Rossiter’s strike in the 56th ending any hopes for Antrim to save their season.
Andy McEntee’s side would get goals back through Patrick Finnegan and Dominic McEnhill in the closing quarter, but their fate was all but sealed long before Robbie Brooks sent in the Slaneysiders’ fifth goal in the dying stages.
Tomorrow morning’s quarter-final draw is set to be broadcast live on RTÉ Radio 1 as part of Morning Ireland after the news at 8.30am.
