Longford senior hurling manager Diarmuid Cahill has stepped down from his post after two seasons at the helm.

The Tipperary native steered the Midlanders to an Allianz Hurling League Division 4 final appearance this past March, earning the team promotion to Division 3 for 2027.

Cahill’s men would go on to capture the Lory Meagher Cup at the end of May after defeating neighbours Leitrim by five points in the competition’s final at Croke Park.

A statement from Cahill released on Friday confirmed his decision to step down:

“This has been an extremely difficult decision. It has been a privilege to manage Longford and to work alongside such a dedicated group of players, coaches, backroom staff and volunteers who give so much of their time for the advancement of Hurling in the count,”

“I am immensely proud of what we achieved together. Gaining promotion to Division 3 and winning the Lory Meagher Cup are memories I will always cherish. I have no doubt that the commitment, standards and culture developed within the panel have laid strong foundations for the future.

“I would like to sincerely thank the players for their commitment, honesty and hard work throughout my tenure. They have represented the county with pride and were a pleasure to work with. I also want to acknowledge my management team – my selectors Tommy Hawes and Brían Crossan, Coach Dinny Cahill, S&C team of Tom Devereux & Jack Greally, Nutritionist Ella Cooney, Statistician Ryan Jones, Logistics Tony Ghee, the Physio team of Aisling Lyons & Dylan Duffy, County Officers – particularly Peter O’Reilly, Ciaran Walsh & Derek Fahy, The Clubs and many supporters who backed us every step of the way. I’d also like to thank Longford GAA’s main sponsors Glennon Brothers who were a huge support.

“I wish the players, the incoming management team and Longford GAA every success in the future. I will always follow the county’s fortunes with great interest and hope to see Longford continue to build on the progress that has been made.

“I’m delighted to have had the opportunity to serve as Senior Hurling Manager and it has been an honour to represent Longford GAA.”

Longford county board chairman Derek Fahy also commented: “On behalf of Longford GAA, I want to sincerely thank Diarmuid Cahill for his excellent and tireless work with our Senior Hurlers over the past two seasons. Together with his management and backroom team, they have elevated Longford Hurling to great heights, delivered fantastic results on the big stage and built strong foundations for future success.

“18 players have made their Longford Senior Hurling debuts over the past two years, with a blend of youth and experience delivering promotion to Division 3 for 2027 and Longford’s third Lory Meagher Cup title in 2026.

“We are eternally grateful, not just for where Diarmuid guided the team to on the pitch, but also for the work he did in the background and interest he showed in promoting Hurling at all levels in Longford during his tenure.

“We wish him every good fortune in his future roles.”
