A Westmeath exile in New York is celebrating after winning first prize in Westmeath GAA's Win a Home in Spain fundraising draw last night.
Mullingar native John Moore, who heads up the Moore Development Group in New York, Florida, New Jersey and Connecticut, and whose family are immersed in the GAA on both sides of the Atlantic, won a brand new two-bedroom home in Murcia as well as a €50,000 cash prize. The winning ticket was pulled by 2022 Rose of Tralee Rachel Duffy from Rosemount.
The draw, which is supporting Westmeath GAA’s new Centre of Excellence project in Mullingar, was postponed by a month due to disappointing ticket sales. The county board had set an ambitious target of selling 15,000 tickets at €100 each, but sold just over 9,000 in the end.
Despite clearing a profit of over €500,000, Westmeath GAA chairman Frank Mescall expressed disappointment with the buy-in, saying he was only 'half happy' with the number of entries for the draw which is the first of several fundraisers for the Centre of the Excellence.
