Aaron Fitzgerald says he received death threats following an incident with Gearoid Hegarty in the 2022 Munster SHC which led to the Limerick forward being sent off.
The former Clare defender ended up on the ground after the 64th minute flashpoint that resulted in Hegarty receiving a second yellow card from referee Colm Lyons. Limerick manager John Kiely claimed there had been no contact between the players as the sides played out a thrilling round-robin draw before the Treaty County prevailed after extra-time in the Munster final three weeks later.
Recalling the incident on the Smaller Fish podcast, Fitzgerald said: “I felt contact and I went down. I’m okay now after it anyway! I had death threats and everything through Instagram and Facebook, and everything over it. It was an awful couple of weeks, to be honest with you.
“I had three or four lads with death threats and I’d say I had eight or nine other messages to my personal account. These weren’t even people who tried to hide themselves, they were normal people.
“I can remember I was sitting down beside herself on the couch and I was going to write back to one of these lads.”
The Éire Óg, Ennis dual star added: “I picked and chose who I was writing back to — he was a small little scrawny fella and I was going to say did he want my address if he wanted to call down. But she wasn’t long reminding me that we had two kids in the house so that wasn’t long going out the window.
“I just went off Facebook and Instagram for a while and let it mellow out.”
