Tyrone vs Cavan

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Lots to be positive about for the rest of the league after today. Wasted chances cost us and management will need to pick a forward line who can function as a unit for next week. Can see us been in the shake up for promotion in April.

This was a game we could have won which would have given us a great start to our league campaign. However our old faults came back to haunt us. Once we got within shooting distance we start to back peddle and don't have the forwards to get the scores.Management too slow to make changes when certain players weren't playing well. New year same old story I'm afraid.

Marita i really have to agree no one prepared to take a chance kick outs left a lot to be desired considering he was never under any pressure felt management not able to make decisions quick enough i really hoped things would have improved with all these players back

Lads. What exactly did you expect today? We've had the same manager in charge for 6 years now, why some supporters think things will improve is beyond me. I didn't go to the game myself as I can see what 2016 has in store for us, but out of interest, was there much of a Cavan support there?

Yes, we are terrible. We should be trashing minnows like Tyrone in their own back yard.

Very disappointing to day,, The game was there to be won. Same old faults was there but,, not pushing up on Tyrone's kick out's, we cant be letting the opposition winning there own kick outs uncontested , players playing that were given chance after chance and manager still persists with them , too slow to make changes, .We need a settled team , nobody seemed to know were each other was going to be with the amount of passes that went astray . Shooting is still a major problem, we missed enough easy chances that would have won the game,, no point bring Johnston back, if there only going to play him the last 5 or 10 mins, and this thing of bring a player on when the game is in injury time and we are losing is crazy .

Nothing much changed. Two teams with blanket defences and add in he dreadful conditions. It made for a low scoring game.

Game there for the taking with 10 mins to go. Good teams kick on and get whatever scores they need to eke out a win. Same old story with Cavan.
When it came down to the wire you just knew it would be Tyrone who would kick on. Early inntye second half when Gearoid kicked us 1ahead Tyrone shrewdly brings Peter Harte in. We bring Enda Henry. Surly that was the time to bring the steady influence and experience of Niall Murray in. Is he injured or what? Cannot understand that a guy who got man of the match just a few weeks ago and singled out as one of our most improved and key players does not feature at all today?

What's the story with Rory Dunne?
We could have been doing with Killian Clarke further out the field.

The people on the sidelines will have to learn soon how to win tight games.

Hard luck yesterday, Sounded like a tight battle, nip and tuck all the way until the last 7 minutes or so. Dust yourselves down and get ready for Derry

Well we scored one more point than I thought we would so it wasn't a bad guess.
Weather conditions played their part.
My prediction would've been a lot closer if the game wasn't played in such horrid conditions.

Hard luck lads. No Cavan supporter can fault the players for lack of effort. It was a long ould journey to cheer on the team but still worth it when lads give everything for the blue jersey. They tried their hearts out but luck was against them and a few dodgy ref decisions. ( Paul O Connor blatantly fouled in last 10 mins and no free, Tyrone move up the field and ref gives them soft free 30 yds out which they score)
All week we heard the usual suspects talking about 7 , 9 or 12 point thrashing. Well I was right in my summation that we would surprise a few people. And a bit of luck we could have won the game. That goal chance at the end could have won it !!
I think what let us down mainly was poor shooting ( Keating kicked 3 howlers in a row in 2nd half) and a few more weak efforts into the goalies hands. Our keeper panicked a bit in 2nd half and cost us 2 points so would go for O'Mara in future.
The forward subs that came on definately improved things and Paul O Connor showed very well and won his own ball unlike in the 1st half. Seanie looked lively but will have to curb his agression. Henry tried hard as well.
The backs as a whole were superb and in particular the inexperienced half back line of C. Brady, Moynagh and Mc Veety who were brilliant. Young Faulkner was very good as well.
I think Gearoid soldiered hard around the middle but Givney was quiet enough. Killian Clarke could be an option there if Rory was back for full back. He brings pace. Or Argue if he has improved or even Buchanan.
The forwards struggled even though Mackey and Martin Reilly covered a lot of ground mostly in defence unfortunately. Mc Dermotts injury was a loss but Jack Brady struggled because of his size.

So i think the important thing is to learn from yesterday and the young players in particular will realise they are every bit as good if not better than all these Ulster stars. A win next Sat night will get us back on track hopefully.

P.S. Amused at Micky Hartes summing up of the game. You would think Tyrone only ever played with 6 defenders back. Take of the red tinted glasses Mickey !!. Dident tou invent the blanket. And as for Tommy Carr on RTE , the less said about that gent the better.

I made the journey to Omagh yesterday and would agree with Breffni dubs assessment. I felt the foul on Paul O Connor was blatant but he would have to give a penalty which Coldrick was going to give. I also felt that Peter Harte fouled the ball in front of his own goals when the goalkeeper went missing no way a free out. The backs were excellent. I would agree that the keeper move is not working and he caused panic as well as three points due to the kick outs. Midfield faded in and out of the game and this combination is not right for us. Discipline needs to be watched Givney was luck to stay on the pitch for his knee in the back of Cavanagh just after he had been booked. McVetty was involved in a lot off the ball stuff.
I didnt like to see the carry on of Cavanagh and McMahon in Keating face when he missed three bad wides in the second half.

Mickey Harte seems to forget it was his no 2 Peter Donnelly who trained Cavan how to defend the Tyrone way. Tyrone had as many behind the ball as Cavan had mirror image.
There was plenty to be positive about yesterday.

Cheers for the balanced reports lads, much appreciated. The constant negativity from the usuals can really suck the enjoyment out of this board and following your county.

Wouldn't it be lovely to win a tight game though Breffni39.
Just for a change.

Cavan vs Tyrone
agree with all the posters who like myself were at the match yesterday, on a wet miserable day the lads put in a good performance which hopefully they can build on, I thought that with a little more confidence in their final passes we could have taken something from the game .
A couple of gripes about the day why were there only a couple of hatches open to buy the tickets ( huge queues left standing in the rain missing the first 10 mins of the match) and when we got there they seemed genuinely surprised that there were Cavan people at the match and coming with "euros" to pay in !
Also listening to Tommy Carr on rte1 on way back am afraid he still has'nt forgiven us for the way he was dismissed from his post , very bitter indeed ! he needs to move on

Breffni39 - Constant negativity - can you tell us how to take any positives out of scoring 3 point from play in 70 mins?

Deanmartin- we scored 3 points in the second half against Tyrone!!!! Surely you of all people will be acutely aware of the significance of this and the huge progress it represents for Cavan football.

Thanks Hardtimes - 3 points in the second half againsy Tyrone - certainly an improvement from the last time we played them in the McKenna Cup Final, when we didn't score anything at all in the 2nd half.
I agree, we are moving up and getting better! Terry has really done a great job, Martin Reilly was one of the best defenders on the day - oh wait, I meant forward, or defender, or forward....

He doesn't even get the most basic irony.

I heard that Cavan only soloed the all 43 times in the second half. They'll win nothing with that kind of messing. And only one red-haired player starting - ridiculous.
