Happy new year folks, I'm looking forward to see a bit of county football again after a disappointing 2021, anyone hear anything from the county set up lately regarding the panel ?

Not all new players listed, Cavan used around 24 players last night and scored 4 points from play I think. It could have been a draw but late scores saw Armagh win by 4. Seanie has I bit of work to do with regard scoring.

Reasonable performance last night but really need some of the big names back and fit.

Faulkner, Ciaran Brady, Gerry Smith would all bolster the back line and allow Oisin move back into the forward line where he's needed.

Scoring 11pts in 70 minutes is not going to get the job done against any opposition… 4 from play with none in the opening 35mins is terrible… A decent runout all the same to shake off the cobwebs and as I said the opening league match v Leitrim is all that counts but our continued low scoring return for me is a huge worry…

Positive run out last night overall.
You can see glimpses of Riceys influence already, we look a lot more disciplined in the tackle, no stupid frees like last year. In addition, we were breaking at speed in that second half on the turn over. I'd love to see how many scores came of it .
Gearoid outstanding last night, we probably under estimate how much this man carrys this team. We won't appreciate it until he's gone.
Once agsin, we have a serious problem with the rest of our forwards. Lots of lads have been given chances over the last few years but you would have to question if they are good enough at this stage.
My preference for the league would be the two O Reilly brother's from the Bridge. They have a bit about them and can definitely score. We need forwards to take pressure of Gearoid as he will be well marshalled as the year goes on.

Wouldn't be too worried. It was a decent game for first of the season, and some players played well (GMac was class as usual) and some are clearly getting back up to speed as well as some minutes from lads off the bench. I saw a lot good last night. We didn't score a goal, but had a fair few chances. Hit a lot of wides while in good positions. Is a slight worry, but this stuff will come as we get more game time and we'll not usually miss than % of shots again. It was good to see us running down the middle and making chances which we're usually not so good at. We had some lovely scores that 2nd half and were leading coming into injury time. Overall I'm not too disappointed. It is a pre season game after all. I saw enough to show that with players getting back up to speed, we'll start taking our chances.

Do agree, but decent for first match out. It's the time to try a few positional changes, and then bring personnel in from the line and see what works. Nice few sprung from the bench and overall a lot of known faces were on the pitch at some stage last night. Let them get through this pre season and get the last fit for Leitrim and see where we are then. Saw a lot of good last night, and other stuff which can be worked on...

I can't understand for the life of me why Mickey Graham doesn't give game time to Liam Brady in these matches. We know Ray is No 1 but as far as I'm aware Liam is in his 3rd possibly 4th year on the panel and I'm open to correction but I think he has still yet to make his senior competitive debut.

Looked like a good outing last night for both teams, was a bit worried when i seen armagh putting out a full strength side but it was fairly even game throughout and both managers will be pleased, result is irrelevant

Positives
- Graham seems to be taking the early season stuff more serious this year, most of our main guys were listed in panel. Its essential we tun up to league with correct attitude from the start so good to have our key men from 2020 all back (bar Holla)
- Gearoid was outstanding, in the absense of a marquee forward putting him at ff for the year could solve some problems
- defence done really well against a fairly formidable armagh attack, not too worried about defence and faulkner and holla yet to return
- James smith back at full health, this lad is the real deal, if we are to be at anything we need this guy fit and flying for the whole season

Negatives
- No sign of a marquee forward putting their hand up yet, this is a problem for years now, we dont have anyone in the county that can turn around and kick 1-6
- worryingly none of the young guns putting their hand up yet. It seems to be the same old core of soldiers carrying the fight (Kiernan, Jayo, Gearoid, Gunner, R Galligan). We need a renewed focus on u20 and minor success again after a few lax years. Offaly have been able to call on 11 of their u20 stars from last year

Onwards and upwards...i want to see them respect the league and stamp their superiority on every team in div 4 and show they have no business being there, if they turn up with attitude they bought againts wicklow last year could be in for a rude awakening

Looking back on last night , I couldn't be prouder of the boys who represented their county with distinction and passion. As a Breffni Gael , I passed on heading into the park last night in fear of UTTER EMBARRASSMENT but I will be the first man in on Tuesday night as we take on the All Ireland champs. Good to see a few debuts get a run out , some better than others … G Mc impressive so I hear but should have had a couple of majors which is disappointing.
Patrick Lynch on the other hand struggled again, FF at inter county is a different level and he'll learn through time.
Once we get bodies back we can build that Ulster winning core again, Hola , Gerry Smith etc .
Look as we all know , ' ya can't fire a canon out of a canoe , and that is something Mickey and the lads should know by now .. Onwards and upwards

Need a shake up in goals too, Liam Brady deserves a chance as Ray is too comfortable on nets at the moment and needs some real competition.

From the county final and replay how many of those 40+ players played v Armagh? 2 maddens is all I counted from the 2 best teams in the county. With no representatives from the county champions. Maybe they were given an break due to playing in ulster clubs in December. Would be good to see Beano O'Connell, 2 Magees, Damien Barley, Jack Brady, James Brady, and Sean McEvoy on county panel for the league & championship.

7 players from Ramor were asked in. 6 said no. That's on those players and no one else. Having watched them getting tanked by Kilcoo maybe it's as well they stayed at home where they don't have to put the work in.

I don't know what a silly quote used by a silly little rugby manager has to do with it but what I do know is we need everyone firing when we go to Carrick on Shannon in a couple of weeks…. Leitrim under new management will be up for this and if we don't show more guts for the battle than we did when getting embarrassed by Wicklow we could be in for a rude awakening…..

I'm no expert but I would assume winning a senior championship would require 'putting the work in'

It's easy from the outside looking in but I wouldn't begrudge anyone turning down the opportunity to play county, especially when many of those have been there before so I'm sure they have their reasons for saying no

That's the problem. Fellas like you excuse this. You think in mayo, dublin, kerry this would accepted. No in cavan we know better, blame the manager or the clubs or lack of amalgamations but never blame the rotten attitude of some players around the county. My opinion, they probably not good enough or not brave enough to try and step up to the level in case they'd be shown up. Better to be the big fish in the small pond. So no point wasting breath on them.

Ah now, that's harsh. Kilcoo are a very well oiled machine at that level, and I don't think anyone can begrudge Ramor celebrating their win (which looks like they did). A one off game against a team who is Ulster champions (and might be again) and have been in this competition 9 times in 10 years isn't the way to look at this. They were the best team in Cavan, and while I'm disappointed, that's their call.
