Donegal strike late to send Mayo packing as Tyrone ease into All-Ireland quarter-finals

Ciaran Moore grabbed the late winner for Donegal as they sent Mayo crashing out of the All-Ireland senior football championship with a 0-19 to 1-15 win at Dr Hyde Park this afternoon.

Mayo looked to have done enough to earn a draw with the Ulster champions which would’ve been enough to seal a place in the preliminary quarter-finals, but Moore’s point at the death dealt them defeat meaning that Cavan take third place in Group 1 instead.

Jim McGuinness’s side had built up a 0-9 to 0-6 lead by the end of the first-half ahead of Mayo trimming their deficit down to one and then firing in a David McBrien goal that saw them hit the front in the 57th minute.

With Michael Murphy to the fore for them, the Tir Chonaill men got motoring again and edged two in front again ahead of a Ryan O’Donoghue free being backed up by Fergal Boland’s levelling point late on, but there was still time for Moore to come up with the winner for Donegal as they now gear up for a home preliminary quarter-final.

Tyrone had it all their way in their third-round clash in the Sam Maguire Cup race, hammering Cavan on a 0-31 to 0-18 scoreline in Enniskillen to claim top spot in the group and advance directly to the All-Ireland quarter-finals.

Darren McCurry scored 0-9 over the 70 minutes at Brewster Park, while Darragh Canavan (0-5) and Mattie Donnelly (0-4) were among the 11 scorers for a Red Hands side which held a 0-17 to 0-8 lead at the halfway stage.

Cavan were simply outclassed by Malachy O’Rourke’s men on the day and now must pick themselves up for an away preliminary quarter-final next weekend which will be against either Down, Dublin or Kerry.
