Offaly GAA has led the tributes to former county hurler Eddie Bevans who has passed away at the age of just 41 after a battle with illness.

Shinrone GAA have also paid tribute to their clubman who was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease last year and went on to raise more than €30,000 for the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association by taking part in a sponsored climb of Croagh Patrick.

The county board tribute read: "Offaly GAA was deeply saddened to learn of the death of Eddie Bevans from Shinrone, at the age of 41, following a brave battle with illness.

"Eddie represented Offaly hurlers at Minor level in 2002 and 2003, before going on to play at U21 level for three years 2004 to 2006. He made his senior debut against Wexford in the Leinster Championship of 2006 and made five Senior Championship and five league appearances for the county.

"He was a stylish forward who represented his club Shinrone with distinction and pride. We extended our deepest sympathy to his wife Sinead, son Cian, parents, brother and sisters and extended family.

"Ar Dheis Dé go raibh a h-anam Dilis."
