Tickets for Westmeath’s All-Ireland SFC Round 1 fixture against Cavan at TEG Cusack Park on Saturday week sold out within minutes of going on sale yesterday afternoon.

All 11,500 tickets were quickly sold out on both Ticketmaster and in participating SuperValu and Centra stores, leaving thousands of fans disappointed. Support for maroon and whites has reached unprecedented levels after they were crowned Leinster football champions for the first time in 22 years thanks to a memorable extra-time victory over Dublin at Croke Park last Sunday.

“In some ways we’re delighted but in other ways it’s causing headaches because of the demand,” Westmeath GAA Head of Operations Patrick Doherty told the Westmeath Examiner.

“We’d never have envisaged selling out a game here, we haven’t done it in years upon years.

“It’s an indication of where we’re at and how good winning the Leinster Championship has been, so great it’s absolutely super.”

There have been calls for the eagerly-anticipated fixture to be moved to nearby Glenisk O’Connor Park which has an 18,000 capacity to cater for demand, but Westmeath were never going to give up home advantage as a provincial finalist or let local businesses and hostelries in Mullingar down.
