Dublin will play Wexford in the quarter-finals of the Walsh Cup on Thursday evening after both teams secured opening wins in the pre-season competition this afternoon.

Niall Ó Ceallacháin’s Dublin side were 0-23 to 0-17 winners over Carlow at the SETU Carlow Campus where they motored past the hosts in the second-half.

A tight first-half saw the sides all square on 0-11 apiece in the 28th minute before Davy Keogh and Diarmaid Ó Dúlaing (free) sent over scores in the run up to the break for the capital men.

Dara Purcell (2), Ó Dúlaing (2) and Liam Mostyn stretched the visitors’ advantage to seven after the change of ends, and while Martin Kavanagh and Conor Kehoe would narrow the Carlow deficit down to four points, the home side wouldn’t be able to close the gap as the points of Conor Burke and Sean Gallagher saw out Dublin’s win.

Dublin now face Wexford in the last eight of this pre-season competition out east after the Model men defeated Laois by 1-20 to 0-17 in Rathdowney.

Having led by 0-9 to 0-7 at the halfway stage, Laois pushed their lead out to three with a Jack Kelly point early in the restart ahead of the visitors kicking into gear.

Ciaran Regan’s goal in the 37th minute saw them drawing level and the points of Eamon Wickham, Simon Roche and Ross Banville helped them establish a five-point lead prior to Wickham and Roche rounding off their winning tally late on.

Meanwhile, the three other games scheduled in the Walsh Cup this afternoon fell victim to the freezing weather conditions, meaning coin tosses decided which teams progressed from the fixtures between Offaly v Antrim, Kildare v Galway and Westmeath v Kilkenny.

Offaly, Galway and Westmeath won the coin tosses to advance while Antrim, Kildare and Kilkenny now enter into the Walsh Shield competition.

In today’s Kehoe Cup opener, first-half goals from Seanie Germaine and Brandon Ryan were key as Wicklow edged Down by 2-13 to 0-17 to commence 2026 with a victory.
