McGinley's Donegal career 'came to a natural end'

Former Donegal goalkeeper Mark Anthony McGinley.

Mark Anthony McGinley has no regrets about returning to his soccer roots after four years as Donegal goalkeeper.

The Finn Harps 'keeper was succeeded between the Donegal posts by another former League of Ireland player, Shaun Patton.

“Shaun was the same as myself, more of a soccer background," he told the Irish Daily Mirror.

“He got injured playing for Sligo Rovers, then he didn't have a club and came up to us when I was with Donegal. I got injured and he got in and he's been brilliant for Donegal ever since. The roles were reversed and I went back to soccer. It's funny how things work out.

“But if I’m honest, I’ve always preferred soccer. GAA is king in Ireland and it was something that I enjoyed. We had plenty of good days and plenty of bad days.

“The standouts are the big days in Croke Park, three big Ulster finals, winning one of them in 2018. Great days, great memories. But then I tore my quad twice the season before last and I was out of the team. It came to a natural end but I wasn't really enjoying it any more."
