National Football League Semi Final Westmeath bowed out of the Division 2 National Football League race on Sunday last when going under to Donegal in Cavan, but they did not go down without a fight. Donegal started the brighter but once Westmeath settled into the game they were always in touch with their Ulster opponents. With Dessie Dolan in sparkling form, scoring four first half points, Westmeath had the deficit cut to one point as the match ticked towards added on time. However Donegal finished stronger and two late points saw the half time score at 0-8 to 0-5 in the Donegalmen's favour. The second half continued along similar lines and when P.J. Ward goaled after fifteen minutes of the half it looked as though it could be Westmeath's day. However to be fair to Donegal they finished the stronger and despite Dessie Dolan's eighth point of the day in the final minute, Donegal held on to win by 0-14 to 1-9. While it was disappointing to lose on the day, I am sure that Tomás Ó Flatharta and his selectors will have been pleased with another improved performance and he side will now go into the championship match against Offaly in four weeks time with a renewed level of hope. National Hurling League Semi Final Also on Sunday last the Westmeath hurlers played their National League Division 2 semi final when they travelled to Navan to play Dublin. Westmeath had a good start to the match with two Andrew Mitchell points in the early stage. However Dublin gradually took control and it took two injury time points from Brendan Murtagh and Barry Kennedy to keep a reasonably respectable look on the scoreboard as the Dubliners led 0-10 to 0-6 at the break. Playing with the aid of a fresh breeze in the second half Westmeath had reason to be hopeful but Dublin played an excellent containing game and, indeed, scored the game's only goal to run out relatively comfortable 1-15 to 0-11 winners. Again Westmeath will be reasonably pleased with the performance and will have a degree of hope as they go into their championship encounter with the same opponents, this time in Parnell Park.
