Christy Ring Cup Senior Hurling Heartiest congratulations to the Westmeath senior hurlers, who, by virtue of their excellent 3-21 to 3-14 win over Down have qualified for the semi-final of the Christy Ring Cup. Travelling more in hope than anticipation the Westmeath lads rose to the occasion wonderfully and produced their best performance of the year to out-hurl the home side and deservedly take the honours on the day. Westmeath held a 2-11 to 1-9 lead at half-time, the goals coming from an Andrew Mitchell free and Killian Cosgrove. John Shaw, whose move to centre half forward was a match-winner, scored 0-2, as did Barry Kennedy and Andrew Mitchell. Joseph Clarke and Dermot Curley weighed in with points in the first half, with Enda Loughlin, who again hurled excellently scoring a delightful line-ball. Also instrumental in Westmeath's win was a wonderful performance by the half-back line of Brian Connaughton, Darren McCormack and Brendan Murtagh with Connaughton and Murtagh both scoring first-half points. Within four minutes of the re-start, Down closed the gap to two points with a goal but Westmeath refused to panic and second half points were scored by Andrew Mitchell (2), John Shaw (2), Killian Cosgrove (2) and one each from Joseph Clarke, Ronan Whelan and Barry Kennedy. Barry Kennedy scored the second half goal following a pass from Killian Cosgrove (his return following illness was vital to Westmeath's win) and this goal with about 15 minutes remaining sealed a great win. As runners-up in the group Westmeath now play the top team in Group B, Kildare, in the semi final. This will be played on the weekend of 30/31 July and Seamus Qualter and the panel will be confident that, with the same level of performance as they produced on Saturday last, that they reach the final.
