Athlone 0-14 Caulry 1-9
Our Junior men's team notched their second victory of this year's Championship with a hard-fought victory over neighbours Caulry in Páirc Chiaráin on Saturday night. Athlone led by 0-8 to 0-7 after a high quality first half, and stretched their lead early in the second period with an excellent Tadhg Prendergast point, but fell behind when a botched short kick out led to a Caulry goal. The home team responded well to this setback however and four fine points from play from veterans Emmet Collins, Mickey Greene (0-2) and Joe Fallon saw them lead by three points as the game entered its final five minutes. Two points in quick succession from the visitors cut the lead back to the minimum, but the Athlone defence did well prevent an equaliser and a late Emmet Collins point left Athlone the victors on a final score of 0-14 to 1-9.

Mullingar Shamrocks 0-16 Athlone 1-06
An understrength Athlone team were comprehensively beaten by a strong Mullingar Shamrocks side in Springfield on Sunday evening. Trailing by eight points after a disappointing first half, during which they failed to raise a white flag and had only a John Stapleton goal to show for their efforts, Athlone improved after the break and finally got some scores on the board. However they were unable to reduce the deficit in any meaningful way and Shamrocks ran out comfortable winners on a scoreline of 0-16 to 1-6.

Official opening of the David Allen Memorial Pitch:
Saturday, 30th April last was both an emotional and a proud day for Athlone GAA club as the new third pitch was formally opened and named as the "David Allen Memorial Pitch". All concerned with Athlone GAA know of the long association between the club and the Allen family and in particular the work done by Davy Allen with underage football. When Davy tragically succumbed to cancer four years ago at the tender age of 42, it left a large void in the Minor Board of the club and it was fitting that the pitch opening was marked by an underage match. We welcomed Salthill/Knocknacarra's U16 team which continued a long association with the men from the West. It was particularly poignant that the home team was lead out by Davy's son Shane, who is a credit to his mother Tara and his late dad. He has turned in to a fine young man.
The day itself was marked by the teams being led onto the pitch by the Athlone Pipe Band and, following the playing of the National Anthem, Fr. Declan officially blessed the new pitch. Tara, son Shane and daughter Kayleigh then unveiled a plaque in Davy's memory and following speeches by Fergal O'Toole (Minor Board Chairman) on behalf of the club and Davy's brother Jimmy, on behalf of the family, the football began under bright sunshine. In what was an excellent display of football, the visitors emerged victorious and earned the bragging rights that took place over a well-earned barbecue afterwards. The real winner on the day was the GAA community where members, young and old, stood together to remember one of their own and look forward to the future of the club through the children playing in the blue.
Many thanks to the Minor Board for organising the day, to Alan Mulholland and his Salthill/Knocknacarra charges for making the trip, to the Athlone Pipe Band for creating a brilliant atmosphere, to Fr. Declan for adding a solemn and human touch, to the Allen family for their continuing support of the club and to the many members who turned out to make the day very memorable.
Athlone U12 girls had their 2nd last game of the group stage away to Kilbeggan. Playing with the breeze, Kilbeggan got off to a great start with a goal and a point. Athlone replied with 2 points to reduce the lead, but Kilbeggan added another 3 goals and 2 points, with Athlone only scoring another 2 points in the first half, leaving the score 4-03 to 0-04 to Kilbeggan at the break.
In the 2nd half Athlone played much better, scoring 2-02 and keeping Kilbeggan scoreless. Athlone could have scored another few goals only for the strong performances from the Kilbeggan goal keeper and full back. Despite a much better performance from Athlone, Kilbeggan held out to win 4-03 to 2-06. Athlone now have one game left in the group stage Vs Goldsmith Girls (Tubberclaire), which will be played in the next 2 weeks
