ACFL Division 1
Athlone v Bunbrosna
Athlone's Senior footballers slumped to their fifth consecutive ACFL Divison 1 defeat when they went down to perennial bogey team Bunbrosna in Bunbrosna on Saturday night. Athlone made a great start to the campaign, winning their opening three matches, but the last few weeks have proved difficult and they go into the last round of games in mid-table, but with relegation from the top division still a possibility.
After some early Athlone wides, Peter Tormey pointed to put Bunbrosna ahead in the second minute, but Athlone responded well with two excellent points from Ray Connellan and John Stapleton. However, disaster struck Athlone in the eighth minute when Tormey, who was excellent throughout the match, struck two well-taken goals in the space of the 30 seconds to put Bunbrosna five points clear. Paul Bannon pulled a point back for Athlone with a free, but the dark blues had their tails up and scored the next four points to lead 2-5 to 0-3 after 23 minutes. Brian Fogarty battled hard to pull a goal back for Athlone and Mickey Greene added a point to reduce the gap to four points, but two more Bunbrosna points, to one for Athlone from Alan Gaughan, meant that the north Westmeath men led by 2-7 to 1-5 at the break.
Bunbrosna added another point immediately from the restart, but Athlone then enjoyed their best spell of the game when they scored a quickfire 1-3 to wipe out Bun's lead. Paul Bannon started the comeback with an excellent goal, before points from Brian Fogarty, Ray Connellan and Bannon again drew Athlone level. Bunbrosna briefly restored their lead with another point, but Paul Bannon cancelled that out with an excellent score to leave the sides deadlocked at 2-9 apiece with 20 minutes remaining. After having recovered from a disastrous start, Athlone might've expected to push on for victory, but instead it was Bunbrosna who seized back the initiative. They re-asserted control at midfield and, with Peter Tormey pulling the strings up front, they scored six points in a row to put the game out of Athlone's reach. To their credit, Athlone kept battling and late points from Stephen Ward, Joe Fallon and Neil Scally reduced the gap to three points, but the desired goal chance never came and Bunbrosna held on to win on a scoreline of 2-15 to 2-12.
