WESTMEATH HURLERS LIFT ADRIAN MURRRAY CUP IN U-16 B ALL IRELAND GLORY:
U-16 ALL IRELAND B HURLING:
Westmeath U-16 hurlers were victorious in the All Ireland U-16 B hurling competition last weekend. This competition was held in Westmeath and played in a blitz style with games taking place in three venues in the morning time culminating with the finals in Cusack Park. The Cup is named in honour of the late Adrian Murray, and incidentally his daughter Susan was team co-ordinator with the victorious Westmeath team
The final between Westmeath and Kildare was a lively encounter with Westmeath seeking their first win in this competition since 1991while Kildare had last won in 2002. The first half was very evenly contested but Kildare goals from Niall Walsh and Gerry Keegan being the difference, while Westmeath relied mainly on scores from Niall O' Brien who notched 1-02, to leave Kildare up by three points at the break 2-03 to 1-03.
Westmeath started the second half much brighter with full forward Kieran Glennon scoring two great goals in the first and ninth minute and Westmeath took control from here on in, with further points from Robbie Greville (2) Niall O' Brien (3) and Emmet Corrigan (1), while holding Kildare to just a goal and two points, to leave the final score 3-08 to 3-05 and Westmeath lifted the Adrian Murray Cup for the first time to rapturous applause from the small but appreciative crowd.
Congratulations and well done to the lads and in Particular to the management team of Ray Gavin , (Castletown-Geoghegan), Paul Moore, (Brownstown), Jody Murray (Castlepollard), Ciaran Williams (Lough Lene Gaels), and Susan Murray (Crookedwood).
