Westmeath suffer Wilson blow

Westmeath's Fergal Wilson
Westmeath forward Fergal Wilson's season could be over after he suffered a suspected cruciate ligament injury last weekend.

The Tubberclair clubman is awaiting results of a scan on the injury he sustained in a club game against local rivals Tang last Sunday, but isn't hopeful of receiving positive news. Wilson had only recently returned from a broken finger which confined him to the role of an unused substitute in Westmeath's Leinster SFC quarter-final win over Wicklow.

"I just slid in to collect a ball on the wet surface and felt my knee go," he told the Westmeath Independent.

"To be honest, I thought I'd just twisted my knee a little bit and that it would be okay, so I continued for a short period. But the knee went completely from under me when I moved for the next ball. I knew something was wrong and the Tubberclair physio wasn't too positive from the off.

"I've since visited the Westmeath team doctor and he's not too optimistic either. He think it could be a cruciate ligament injury, and that would be a desperate blow for me," the 30-year-old added.
