CLONKILL CLAIM SECOND TITLE IN THREE YEARS AS THE GAELS RUE MISSED EASY CHANCES GREVILLE ARMS SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP HURLING FINAL: The final of this year's senior hurling championship took place last weekend between Lough Lene Gaels and Clonkill in front of a 2,700 strong crowd at Cusack Park Mullingar. The game was played at a fast committed pace and in a good sporting manner with only two yellow cards being shown in the hour by referee Barry Kelly. Clonkill got the better of the early exchanges and when The Gaels Keeper Mark Briody made a rare error, Clonkill pounced to take the games first goal nudged home by Larry Donoghue. In the twentieth minute the Gaels came to life when a low shot from Dan Carthy made it to the bottom corner of the Clonkill net which gave them a slender one point lead. GAME ON!! Clonkill steadied themselves and went in leading at the break. On the resumption both sides exchanged scores and Clonkill stretched their lead out to five, but midway through the second half Derek Mc Nicholas netted a second time for the Gaels from a 20 metre free and the deficit was down to two. Clonkill had the upper hand and their half forward line was causing immense problems for the Gaels and but for poor shooting from wing forward Alan Dowdall (five wides in a row) Clonkill have been home and dry long before the final whistle, they won out on a final score of 1-16 to 2-08. SHAY MURTAGH SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP FOOTBALL: Next weekend in Cusack Park Mullingar the Final of the 2009 Shay Murtagh Senior Football Championship takes place between St. Lomans Mullingar and last years beaten finalists Garrycastle. This is the first final appearance for St. Lomans in forty-one years and they will give undoubtedly their usual committed performance with the hope of bringing success to the club, and will need big displays from James Davitt, Conrad Reilly Kieran Lynam, and the youngster John Heslin who indecently won a Minor hurling Championship medal with Castletown last weekend. Garrycastle on the other hand who lost out to neighbours Castledaly last year will be out to make amends and are probably the form team at the moment and play a fast moving brand of football. They will need big performances from Doran Harte, Dessie Dolan, Alan Daly and James Duignan if they are to take the title. Garrycastle will probably be installed but don't write off the underdogs.
