Mullingar Shamrocks club notes

April 10, 2017

Well done, Killian and Denis

Congrats to Killian and Denis on their part in Westmeath's great 2-24 to 2-11 win in the National League Final. A superb display by Westmeath that will give Banty plenty to think about as he makes the long journey from Monaghan to Wexford as Westmeath has now dished out a trimming to his first and second teams. Westmeath Under-16 Girls were busy also and had a comfortable 4-17 to 2-5 victory over Louth and our players Carla Gibney, Susanna Buckley, Sarah Geoghegan and Rosin McKnight all featured on the day

Ladies' Football Under-16 League

Mullingar Shamrocks girls were far too strong for Ballycomoyle in the Under-16 football league match played in the Harbour Field on Tuesday evening. All the players worked very hard and at the final whistle Shamrocks were comfortable winners.

Mullingar Shamrocks: Isobel Clinton; Ellen Corroon, Ruth Keane, Vicky Kulkova (Aideen Corroon); Roisin McKnight, Carla Gibney, Aideen Byrne; Catherine Tubridy and Susanna Buckley; Nicola Groenwold, Laura Culkin, Sara Geoghegan; Zara Gilligan, Kate Rock, Holly McCormack.

Ladies Football Under-12 League: Milltownpass 2-9 Mullingar Shamrocks 1-2

This was a very good performance despite what the scoreline might suggest by a team that included eleven girls that were playing in their first ever competitive match. Their willingness to play to the end without ever giving up suggests that they will have many good days in the future and enjoy many a victory. Well done girls!

Mullingar Shamrocks: Sinead Sweeney; Phoebe Cadwalader, Katie Starr, Eve Byrne; Emily Clark, Jodie Aherne, Áine Creagh; Emily Moore and Ciara Moore; Natalia Bak, Ellie O'Sullivan, Emily Flynn; Jasmine McFarlane, Sophie Russell, Aleshia Hassett.

Minor Football League: Mullingar Shamrocks 4-4 Lilliput Gaels 3-8

Mullingar Shamrocks came close to salvaging a draw in this encounter played in Springfield on Wednesday evening in what was a very spirted performance by the team. Lilliput Gaels attacked incessantly in the opening twenty minutes but dreadful finishing and some superb defending (especially by Peter Bane) prevented what could have been a scoring avalanche. However, after ten minutes both sides had registered a point each before the Lilliput combination added three unanswered points; Matthew Maslin reduced the deficit with his second point bur a soft goal increased the Lilliput lead (1-4 to 0-2) in the twentieth minute. However, two goals from Seán Wylie (having his best game in a Shamrocks jersey) and Jack Gillen but Shamrocks into the lead and a great long range point from Cormac Darby added to the interval lead (2-3 to 1-4). The Lilliput Gaels doubled their first half tally before Shamrocks registered their first post-interval score, a Matthew Maslin free following a brilliant run by Dylan Matthews. Lilliput Gaels responded with a similar major. Shamrocks again goaled from a Matthew Maslin penalty (2-8 to 3-5). A great save from a Dylan Matthews shot was crucial at this stage before Lilliput Gaels added 1-1 to their total. Jack Gillen netted for Shamrocks final score; two missed frees before the final whistle ended Shamrocks hopes on the night.

Mullingar Shamrocks: Killian White; Darragh White, Brian Reidy, Peter Bane; Jack Kelly (Cian Fox), Conor Fitzpatrick, Marc Eivers; Cormac Darby (0-1) and Dylan Matthews (- black card, Owen Kilduff); Cormac Hynes, Seán Wylie (1-0), Brandon Heffernan (John O'Reilly); Matthew Maslin (1-3), Jack Gillen (2-0), Cian Roe (Ronan McHugh).

Féile na nÓg

Our under-14 boys qualified for the next phase of the Féile with two goods wins against Tubberclare (4-5 to 1-1) and Inny Gaels (3-5 to 2-2).

Time Capsule

The time capsule of the Mullingar Shamrocks Club for inclusion in the Monument in the 1916 Mullingar Memorial Park at the Green Bridge has been packed with material that we hope will interest those who will be around when it is opened in 100 years' time and provide an insight into the club as it was in 2016. Some of the under-6s who are down in Springfield on Saturday morning will surely witness the event. The capsule contains several team pictures, the official opening programme for Springfield in 2002, the Reunion programme from January 2013, the minutes of the executive meeting of February 2017, a note on how Mullingar Shamrocks communicates with members and supporters (that should provoke some discussion in 2117 and a big search to discover what was Facebook, Twitter and ClubifyApp). An entry ticket for our Last Man Standing competition, the text of a motion passed at the AGM are also packed in.

It is impossible to visualise what type of GAA will exist 100 years from now. Will Dublin continue to dominate in football? Will Mullingar Shamrocks still be based in Springfield? Will team managers continue to work the length and breadth of the country for the love of the game? Will the GAA still be the greatest amateur sporting organisation in the world? Will Cusack Park have floodlights? Will Mullingar Shamrocks still be the leading club in the county? Will Westmeath have won its first All-Ireland title in hurling or football? Will the All-Ireland championships still be played on an inter-county basis? How will the salaries of the players compare with players from other sports? How many counties will have gone bankrupt during the century? How many All-Ireland hurling titles will Waterford have won? Will the GAA hierarchy have found the leg of the table used for under-the-table payments to coaches and managers? Will the Railway Cups continue to be played because the players want them even though most of them don't play when selected? Will the GPA have taken complete control of the GAA?

Unfortunately, we won't be around to witness the answers to these and many more such questions.

St Jude's Day in Springfield.

Our friends from St Jude's travelled in style to Springfield today with a bus load of sixty footballers eager to try their skills in a Westmeath setting; our ladies' ladies section rose to the challenge in style and marshalled footballers equal in number and quality to the Dublin girls. Denis Corroon was there to welcome the Dublin girls to Springfield, mountains of food was available to cater for all, proud mammies and daddies were there to support their young footballers, plenty of help was available to manage and organise the afternoon's fun. The football wasn't bad either. Well done to all involved. Chairman Pearse Corroon perfectly captured the spirit of the day when he offered his words of thanks ' to all that made Mullingar Shamrocks a very special place today, to see all our young girl members playing our games and parents providing food for all … a fantastic day for our club and the GAA, well done to St Jude's and Mullingar Shamrocks'. The day ended with a nice gesture from the St Jude's people who presented our officers with two of their club jerseys which were raffled amongst all the Shamrocks girls who played on the day; the jerseys were won by the sisters Kala and Ella Moore.

Spike is Last Man Standing

He was the last to post his final prediction and picked Galway to beat Kildare by two points which is exactly what happened. Spike Fagan with his 100% record is the winner of our Last Man Standing competition and just pips the overnight leader Valerie McCormack who picked Kildare to win by four points.

The late Seán Dempsey

Mullingar Shamrocks Club members were saddened on Friday morning to learn of the death of Seán Dempsey. Sean was Chairman of the Club in the mid-1980s and was one of the men responsible for driving the revival of the club at the time. Sen was Chairman in 1986 when the first county senior title in twenty years was won.

Sen was a noted footballer in his day and was a playing member of the great Athlone six-in-a-row county champion team of 1955-60. At the Athlone Club 50th anniversary reunion held in 2010 Sean was remembered as 'A very pacey and stylish forward; his two brilliant points scored just before half time in the '58 final will always be fondly remembered for all time.   He was an excellent footballer who could command a place on any club or county team.' He also saw played with Ballymore in the 1960s and of course Westmeath and was a member of the first Westmeath team to win the O'Byrne Cup.

The club extends sincere sympathy to Sean's wife Connie and to Paul, Sandra, Noel, Avril, Linda, Karen and Ian and to members of the extended Dempsey family.
