An Chárraig Mhór 17/11/08
The Senior game against Errigal Ciaran was a draw which leaves us waiting on the outcome of other results to see how the league will finish. The game itself was a hard fought contest with some tenacious football despite the adverse conditions endured by both sets of players. We looked to have it in the bag when a goal against the run of play sent Errigal into the lead in the dying minutes. We refused to relent however and pulled back level to share the points at the final whistle. Congratulations to all those who made it through to the final of Scór na Nóg last Sunday night in Kileeshil. Congratulations to: Alanagh McGarrity, Megan Kelly, Eimear Kelly, Ursula McKernan, Orla Mullan, Aisling Mullan, Aileen Fox and Grace Fox who captured the County Title in the Set Dancing and commiserations to the quiz team; Brid Ni Cheara, James Ghent and Patrick McElroy who lost out in their final. The annual mass for the deceased members of the club will take place at the vigil mass on Sat 29th November at 6.030 pm. The club AGM will take place on 7th Dec at 3pm. Aireagal Chiaráin
The curtain came down on the senior's season last Wednesday under lights in Carrickmore. Our seniors took on the home side and, in testing conditions, both teams produced an entertaining game of football. A below-par opening period was a sharp contrast to the second half showing and despite taking the lead late in the day, we had to settle for a point. As this was our final adult game of the year, we take this opportunity to thank all those who wore the Aireagal Chiaráin jersey with pride during the season, as well as those who managed or trained any of our teams. With a season that stretched from February to the end of November, we appreciate the efforts and dedication of everyone connected with our teams. A special word of appreciation to Niall McCullagh who takes a well-earned break after five years helping with the senior teams in the club. Niall's role within the set-up was often a thankless one, however, his calm, composed manner in the dressing room was appreciated by all involved. Thanks Niall.
Our U21s took on Coalisland in the semi-final of the championship on Sunday. It was the Fianna who established a commanding lead in the first half, and, despite some improvement in the closing stages, we never quite got within striking distance. Commiserations to all involved.
Our minors will finally discover who they face in the league final this Saturday, as Dromore take on Omagh in the second semi-final. Details of the league final will follow.

Trillick St. Macartan's
Brewster Park was the place to be last Sunday to witness Trillick advance to the final of the Ulster Intermediate Championship at the expense of Erne Gaels. Despite the blustery conditions the Reds started the game well with two points from Mattie Donnelly but it wasn t long before Erne Gaels found their stride and scored 5 consecutive points. The Reds were made to work hard to narrow the margin and there was only a point between the sides at half time. Paddy Corry opened the scoring in the second half and despite Erne Gaels scoring another point to take the lead again it was to be their last score of the game. Trillick stepped up their attack and the return of Niall Gormley from injury saw the Reds increase their lead and run out eventual winners on a score line of 0-06 to 0-12. (Scorers M Donnelly 0-05; N Gormley 0-03; D Connolly, D McDonnell, P Corry and P O Kane 0-01 each). The Ulster Final will take place on Saturday at 7pm in the Athletic Grounds, Armagh. We would ask everyone to come along and offer their support in what we hope will be a memorable day for the club. Good luck to both the players and management on Saturday.

Edendork secured their place in Division 2 football next season with a hard fought 1-15 to 1-11 victory over Tattyreagh in Killeeshil on Saturday. The team saved their best football for the last game of the year. Every player put in his best performance of the season and we led at half time by 1-08 to 0-03. The attitude and determination of the team on the day was excellent. They had a steely determination not to lose the game and to put in a performance that proved the team were worthy of Intermediate football, they achieved both. Tattyreagh to their credit as expected came out in the second period and threw everything at us. Edendork weathered the storm and kept notching up points to keep daylight between the two teams and eventually ran out winners by four points. An Mhaigh Tir na nOg G.A.C. Notes
(week commencing 24/11/08)
Centenary Gala Night
The highpoint of An Mhaigh G.A.C.'s Centenary Celebrations took place at Armagh City Hotel, on Saturday evening past, when upwards of 600 people gathered for one of the biggest and most significant social occasions ever in our club's history. This eagerly awaited Gala Night was a truly unforgettable experience and, if truth be told, exceeded all expectations.
The many weeks and months of planning and hard work by our Gala committee certainly paid off in terrific fashion as Moy Gaels from all corners of the globe gathered in one large banquet hall to officially mark the club's 100th birthday. The smooth running and overall success of this event was testimony to the organisational skills of the gala committee members who worked tirelessly over a long period. They left no stone unturned in their preparations and this bore fruit on the night when everyone in attendance had a wonderful time.
No words could ever do justice to the enormity and importance of last weekend's Gala Centenary Banquet, but the scale and significance of the event can be gauged by the numbers who attended and the V.I.P.'s who came along to lend their support. Among the special guests were GAA President Nicky Brennan, Tyrone County Board Chairman Pat Darcy, Tyrone senior football manager Mickey Harte, as well as our our own four All-Ireland winning heroes from An Mhaigh - Colm and Sean Cavanagh, Philip Jordan and Ryan Mellon.
There were also people with Moy connections who travelled from as far away as Australia, Canada, U.S.A., Italy and England. Our long standing friends from the Carrigaline club in county Cork were welcome visitors as well, not to mention all those former club members and friends who joined us after many years of absence. It was a time to reminisce and share some fascinating stories of the events and people who have shaped our club's illustrious history. How fitting it was also to have the famous Sam Maguire and Tom Markham All-Ireland winning cups present on this great night, as well as the Cormac McAnallen Cup which was proudly raised aloft by the Moy and Ireland team captain Sean Cavanagh.
Proceedings got underway at 6.30pm with a drinks reception at the entrance to the Fisher Suite, while there was also an opportunity for many of those in attendance to get photographed with the aforementioned cups. This was then followed by the official launch of our Centenary Book inside the main banquet hall. The book, documenting over 100 years of gaelic games and culture in Moy, will be on sale from next month. Former Derry County Board P.R.O. Gerry Donnelly was M.C. for the night and he was ably assisted by our own club compere Mickey Kavanagh, who also gave an inspiring introductory speech before dinner.
Following a well worded address from club Chairman P.B. Laverty and a presentation to our chosen charity, The Newry Hospice, the night continued with a carefully selected five course meal. Grace was said by Fr Hughes CC and, during dinner, a special dvd presentation of our club history was shown on four large screens around the hall. This excellent dvd, compiled by Simon Brady and Mary Daly, is currently on sale (price £10 per copy) and can be obtained by contacting either Frankie Duffy or Simon Brady.
Next on a busy agenda was the presentation and awards ceremony. Special gifts were presented to many people from both within and outside the club who had made significant contributions to the GAA in recent times and there were a number of heart-warming speeches by some of those called to accept awards. Some of our more long standing club officials were also rewarded for their continued service, while our annual football awards for 2008 proved ever pouplar with the large attendance. Padraig Laverty (Senior Player), Niall Kelly (Reserve Player), Martin Conroy (Club Person), Fr Dermot McCaul (Hall of Fame) and Alice Murphy (Ladies Senior Player) were just some of the deserving recipients of our yearly awards.
The current executive committee of An Mhaigh G.A.C., along with GAA President Nicky Brennan, were later called on to officially cut the special Centenary Cake before a number of unique items came under the hammer in our Grand Auction. Sean Harvey performed the role of Auctioneer and among the many items which helped raise significant sums of money for the club were: a centenary group photo signed by the Moy's four county players; 2009 All-Ireland Final Premium Level tickets; a 2008 Ryder Cup Flag signed by members of the Ryder Cup team; a holiday to Bulgaria; a specially commissioned Tyrone Crystal piece; Sean Cavanagh's Ireland International Rules jersey; boots and jerseys worn by our four county players on All-Ireland Final day; and a limited edition of bespoke designed Centenary commemorative jerseys.
A wonderfully entertaining and historic night then ended with our club's Star Prize Draw and dancing to the music of popular band, Manhattan. There have been many great chapters in the proud history of An Mhaigh T??r na n?ìg G.A.C. (1908-2008), and last Saturday's Gala Centenary Banquet was a fitting celebration of all that has went before. It will go down as one of the most memorable club occasions ever and certainly provides huge hope and optimism as we look ahead to the next 100 years.
Well done to all concerned!
Centenary Mass
A special Centenary Mass to remember the deceased members and friends of An Mhaigh G.A.C. was held in St John's Church, Moy on the evening of Thursday 20th November. A large number of local gaels and friends of our club turned out for what was a truly edifying and enriching experience.
Celebrant for the Mass was our Honorary Vice-President Fr. Dermot McCaul S.M.A. Rome, who was joined on the altar by Fr Darragh PP and Fr Hughes CC. Our former player and club official, Fr McCaul, took time out from his duties in Rome last week to join in An Mhaigh G.A.C.'s Centenary Celebrations and expressed his delight at being back home in the Moy. During the Mass, he recalled many wonderful memories of his time involved with the club and remembered in prayer all those associated with gaelic games in the Moy over the past 100 years who had gone to their eternal rest.
Club members, past and present, male and female, also took an active part in the Mass. The choir was led by Sean Kelly and included pupils of St John's Primary School, Moy. Caoimhe Laverty and Martin Conroy said the readings while bidding prayers were read by Eimear McKearney, Jack Kelly, Maeve McKearney, Charlie Lavery (Roxborough), Catherine Duffy and P.B. Laverty. Colin Mackle read the narration for the Offertory procession in which Willie Donaghy (Australia), Karol McQuade, Bernadette Hippolite, Michael Conroy, Declan Conroy and Grace McCormack brought up gifts to the altar.
Ryan Mellon, accompanied by Sean Cavanagh, read the Prayer of a Sportsman following Communion and were both applauded as they returned to their seats. Fr McCaul concluded a beautiful ceremony by thanking several people for the part they played in hosting this very special Mass. Among those he thanked were: chief organisers Frankie and Kay Duffy, along with club secretary Mary Daly; St John's Primary School Principal John Kilpatrick; Sean Kelly and the Moy choristers; Sacristan Kathleen Cartmill; and our two priests Fr Darragh and Fr Hughes.
Afterwards, many of those who had attended the Mass made their way to the Moy Parochial Hall for tea and light refreshments. The club thank all those who showed their support for this very important Church event and helped out in any way at the Mass. Thanks also to everyone involved in both preparing and serving tea on the night.
Senior ACL Division 2
Eiscreach 0-9
An Mhaigh 4-9
An Mhaigh senior footballers took another important step on the way to a possible league title when defeating an eager Eskra side by four goals at Pairc an Eim?©idigh, last Saturday. The scoreline may suggest an easy win for the Moy men, but this was certainly not the case as the homesters fought hard from the outset and were determined to finish their division two campaign on a winning note.
This latest league victory by the Moy came about as the result of yet another strong defensive performance and some clinical attacking play which saw the team in sky blue race into a seven point lead midway through a keenly contested first half. Karol McQuade, Mark Jordan and Colm Cavanagh all fired over points during that opening quarter blitz while Ryan Mellon and Sean Cavanagh struck vital goals. Ryan hit the first of Moy's majors from the penalty spot after seven minutes, following a foul on Sean Cavanagh. Then, six minutes later, Sean capitalised on some good work by his brother Colm and Karol McQuade to shoot low to the corner of the net.
While Eskra may not have been creating the same goal scoring opportunities at the other end, they were getting forward on numerous occasions. Behind 0-3 to 2-4 midway through the half, they would register four more points from placed kicks in the second quarter. An Mhaigh only scored once during this period but it proved to be another major blow to Eskra as Niall Conlon showed bravery six minutes before the break to poke the ball to the net in a goalmouth scramble. An interesting statistic from this half was that Moy recorded no wides, while Eskra had four.
Ahead by six points (3-4 to 0-7) at half-time, the visitors succeeded in killing the game off shortly after the restart. Eskra struck first blood in this half with a pointed free but the Moy's response was swift and deadly. Five minutes in, Sean Cavanagh and Ryan O'Neill combined to put substitute Kris Kavanagh through for their team's fourth goal. There was just no way back for Eskra after that as Mattie McGleenan's charges pressed home their advantage with points from Sean Cavanagh, Karol McQuade (free) and outstanding midfielder Ryan Mellon, whose high fielding was a feature of this game.
With Tommy McNicholl once again outstanding in a watertight Moy defence, the Eskra attack was restricted to just one more score ,Äì a point from play seven minutes from the end. Second half sub Peter Mallon and Sean Cavanagh (free) were both on target for the winners in a low scoring last quarter, while the Eskra goalie also had to be at his best to prevent Ryan O'Neill, Colm Cavanagh and Philip Jordan adding to the Moy's goal scoring tally in this half. Final Score: Eskra 0-9 An Mhaigh 4-9.
An Mhaigh G.A.C. wish to thank Eskra for their kind hospitality after the game and for also agreeing to an earlier throw-in time of 12.00pm last Saturday, which allowed our players and supporters additional time to prepare for our club's Gala Centenary Night. Go raibh maith agaibh!

Cookstown Fr Rocks
Fr Rocks faced county champions Clonoe on Sunday past in a must win league game. In the end two points wwere not enough to secure senior status and the club face a playoff match this weekend, against Donaghmore. Cookstown will go into the game in confident form after a good display last week. The game was played in difficult underfoot conditions and it was Clonoe who adapted quickly, edging into a two point lead in the opening ten minutes. Cookstown did hit back with scores from Raymond Mulgrew and Brian Mulligan and when Ryan Pickering put them ahead in the sixteenth minute, it was a lead that they held to the end of the match. Further scores from Raymond Mulgrew and an Owen Mulligan free gave Cookstown a healthy lead, and a great finish from Raymond Mulgrew brought the goal which Cookstown's attacking play deserved minutes before half time. The score at the break was 1-5 to 0-3. In the second half it was the Rocks that dominated, kicking seven scores from play, including a superb effort from Conor Mullan. The final scoreline finished 1-14 to 0-5 in favour of the home team. This was a good display from Cookstown with some great performances all over the field. The defence was rock solid, with Brian Kelly once again superb. Conor Mullan gave a great performance at midfield, and Raymond Mulgrew and Ryan Pickering caused all sorts of problems in attack. The team face the biggest challenge of the season this weekend and will hope for a similar performance. The Fr Rocks team lined out as follows; D McGuckin, S Monaghan, P McGurk, B Kelly, C O'Hare, B Hughes, P Kelly (0-1), B O'Neill, C Mullan (0-1), M Murray (0-3), R Mulgrew (1-2), O Mulligan (0-4, 3 frees), B Mulligan (0-2), R Pickering (0-1).

Underage News
Fr Rocks recently hosted a series of challenge games against Annaghdown GAC. The Galway club were on a weekend visit to Tyrone, during which they played the Cookstown under 12s and 10s teams at Mid Ulster Sports Arena. Fr Rocks Under 12s recorded an impressive win over their Galway counterparts, and the Cookstown Under 10s gave a spirited performance against an older Under 11 Galway side. The matches concluded another successful underage season and afterwards both sets of players were treated to a buffet function in the Greenvale Hotel, before the Galway side returned home. The club would like to thank all coaches, players and parents involved.
Congratulations
Well done to Shea McGarrity and Matthew Carberry on helping Dungannon Academy to win the Rannafast Cup on Saturday past. Shea continued on the great tradition of Fr Rocks players captaining the school in finals.
Condolences
The club would like to express their sympathy to the McGarrity family on their recent bereavement.
