Canavan wins first club All-Star award
December 11, 2006
County champions Errigal Ciaran have claimed five places on the 2006 Tyrone All-Star club football team which was announced in front of more than 600 guests at the third annual Teamtalk All-Star Awards ceremony in the Great Northern Hotel in Bundoran on Friday night, 8th December.
John Devine, Cormac McGinley, Paul Quinn, Davy Harte and six times national All-Star winner, Peter Canavan, all earned All-Star awards for their outstanding contribution to the club's return to the top of the championship tree in Tyrone. McGinley and Quinn, who also picked up the 'senior club player of the year' award, retained their positions from last year, while Davy Harte also collected the 'county player of the year' prize on the night.
There are seven other clubs represented on the All-Star team, with league champions Dromore taking three positions courtesy of Cathal McCarron, Mickey Garry and Eoin McCusker, a nephew of Peter Canavan.
County finalists Carrickmore are represented by Ciaran McAleer and Gabriel McCallan, with both players making the team for a second time.
Donaghmore, Coalisland, Killeeshil, Stewartstown and newly crowned Ulster Junior champions Greencastle are also represented on a team which has eleven new award winners. Damian McCaul, Philip Toner, Kevin Hughes, Gareth Devlin and Enda Clarke all shone for their respective sides during the 2006 season.
Derrylaughan's Kevin Coary was announced as the Intermediate player of the year, while Martin Conway, who captained Greencastle to three major titles in 2006, received the Junior footballer of the year award.
Donaghmore's Niall McGinn was the young club footballer of the year and the youth footballer of the year trophy went to Coalisland minor star Brian Toner.
Omagh pair, Justin McMahon and Conan Grugan, were on stage to receive the Young County Player of the year and Young Achiever awards, while Sean Teague's outstanding success in his first season as Greencastle manager was acknowledged in the Personality of the year category.
