Walsh Cup: Galway teach UCD a lesson
January 29, 2012

UCD's Oisin Gough tackles Johnny Coen of Galway during the Walsh Cup at Belfield
It was one-way traffic at Belfield as Galway beat UCD by 6-25 to 1-8.
In truth, neither team will learn much from this mis-match and there are certainly bigger tests ahead for the westerners this year.
Debutant Conor Cooney (who bagged an impressive 2-6), Joe Canning (who hit 1-6 in the first half before being substituted), Damien Hayes, David Burke and Iarlaith Tannion scored the goals for the winners.
Anthony Cunningham's first game in charge saw the Tribesmen lining out in treacherous playing conditions in the capital.
The rain was pouring down at Belfield, with the match moved to the all-weather pitch behind the famed campus.
It was all too easy from the off as the visitors compiled an unassailable 3-14 to 0-2 lead, with Portumna clubman Hayes claiming the third goal.
Jamie Ryan in the UCD goal kept the students in it with three excellent first-half saves (and another one after the restart). The Craughwell clubman is also a Galway squad member.
Galway led by 5-20 to 0-7 at the three-quarters stage, with the elusive Tannion notching their fifth goal.
On a day to forget for the college side, Tipp's Noel McGrath popped up with the UCD goal.
