McCarthy to get three-year term in Laois

Laois hurling manager Teddy McCarthy
Teddy McCarthy will be appointed Laois hurling manager for a three-year term at a county board meeting next week.

The former Cork dual star, who attended last Sunday's Laois SHC semi-finals in O'Moore Park, was one of seven candidates interviewed for the job, two of which were from outside the county. While he has no experience of managing an inter-county side, McCarthy acted as a Cork U21 selector for the past two years and is currently in charge of Bandon, who have reached the semi-finals of the Cork IHC.

Former Cork dual All-Ireland winner Teddy McCarthy will be ratified as the new Laois senior hurling manager at a meeting of the county executive next week. The Glanmire man was one of seven candidates interviewed for the job, two of which were from inside the county and the other five from outside the county.

"We interviewed two people from inside the county and five people from outside the county. We called some back for a second interview and after that then we went in favour of Teddy," Laois chairman Brian Allen revealed.

"His (McCarthy's) plan is to meet with the players and club chairmen to discuss their concerns, and he will take on board anything they have to tell him and he will outline his plans for the players over the next few years."

Allen continued: "We are drawing up a shortlist of possible selectors, there could be two or three, Teddy doesn't have a preference so long as they are prepared to work in a hands-on matter and get involved. He also thinks that the selectors should have an eye towards replacing him in when he does leave, that's the way he thinks things should work."

McCarthy's appointment will be subject to a review at the end of each year.
