Ryan Cup: DCU and Carlow IT into final

March 06, 2010
DCU and Carlow IT will meet in today's Ryan Cup final at Pearse Stadium in Salthill after overcoming NUI Maynooth and IT Tralee respectively in yesterday's semi-finals.

Sigerson Cup holders DCU needed extra-time to see off the Maynooth challenge by 1-17 to 0-14. With Offaly duo Colm Coughlan and Diarmuid Horan to the fore, DCU led by 0-6 to 0-5 at half-time, but Jamie Winters forced extra-time with a last-gasp equaliser for Maynooth.

DCU had edged into a 0-15 to 0-14 lead midway through extra-time before they finally broke Maynooth's resistance with the only goal from substitute Philip Murphy.

In the second semi-final, Carlow IT defeated IT Tralee on a 2-11 to 1-10 scoreline, having laid the foundations for their victory in the first half when they led by 2-7 to 0-4 at the break. The Carlow goals were scored by Patrick Walsh and Martin Howley in the sixth and 25th minutes respectively.

IT Tralee closed the gap to 0-8 to 2-10 midway through the second half, and their captain Eoin Ryan then saw his penalty brilliantly saved by Kilkenny All-Ireland winner PJ Ryan in the Carlow goal.

Limerick's Nicky Quaid eventually found the net for the Kerry side, but it wasn't enough to save them.
