Louth fan has charge dropped

February 06, 2012
A Louth supporter accused of assaulting referee Martin Sludden after the controversial 2010 Leinster SFC final in Croke Park has had the case against him dropped.

This morning's sitting of Dublin District Court heard that the DPP was not proceeding against 45-year-old Dermot Rogers from Belfry Gardens in Dundalk. Rogers - who wasn't in court today - was one of a number of enraged Louth fans who confronted the Tyrone official after his decision to award Meath's Joe Sheridan a last-minute goal deprived Louth of their first provincial title in 53 years. Sludden later admitted he made a mistake in allowing the score to stand.

Judge Bridget Reilly said the trial of two other Louth supporters, who were also charged in connection with the incident, should be take place as soon as possible.

Twenty-four-year-old Joseph Conlon of Marlbog Road, Haggardstown and 51-year-old Paul Grimes with an address at Willowdale Bay Estate in Dundalk pleaded not guilty to assaulting Mr Sludden on 11 July 2010.
