WATERFORD CRYSTAL CUP
Tipperary will look to qualify for the final of the Waterford Crystal Cup on Sunday next when they take on Clare in Meelick at 2:00pm. The admission price for the semi-finals and final of the competition is 10 euro.
Alan Byrne (Shannon Rovers), Shane McGrath (Ballinahinch), Conor O'Mahony (Newport) and substitutes Shane Scully (JK Brackens) and Ronan Sherlock (Silvermines) lined out for the Limerick Institute of Technology as they went down in extra time at the hands of Waterford. Sean Horan (St. Patricks) and Niall Teehan (Gortnahoe-Glengoole) lined out for the Cork Institute of Technology in their defeat to Cork. Damien Young (Drom & Inch), Conor O'Brien (Eire Og Annacarty), Kevin Lanigan (Carrick Swan), Hugh Maloney (Nenagh Eire Og) and Ray McLoughney (Kilruane MacDonaghs) lined out for the Waterford Institute of Technology in their defeat at the hands of their native county.
ALL-IRELAND CLUB HURLING SEMI-FINAL
The All-Ireland Club Senior Hurling Championship semi-final between Toomevara and Ballyhale Shamrocks (Kilkenny) has been brought forward by 24 hours and will now take place Saturday, February 10th at 1:00pm in Portlaoise.
SENIOR FOOTBALL CHALLENGE GAME
Tipperary defeated Clare by 1-15 to 2-7 in a Senior Football challenge game played at Bansha on Sunday afternoon. Tipperary dominated the first half and helped by a Declan Browne goal, they led by 1-12 to 1-4 at the interval. Exchanges were closer in the second half and while Clare added a second goal, Tipperary held out for victory by five points. The Tipperary team and scorers were - Ian Browne; Paddy O'Flaherty, Michael Lynagh, Andrew Morrissey; Michael Phelan (0-1), Mark Peters, Cian Maher (0-1); Kevin Mulryan, Benny Hickey (0-4); George Hannigan, Hugh Coghlan, Philip Austin (0-3); Brian Coen (0-2), Stuart Moloney (0-1), Declan Browne (1-3)

UNDER 21 FOOTBALL CHALLENGE GAMES
The Tipperary Under 21 Footballers played two challenge games in the past week as 27 players were used in preparation for the Munster championship. On Friday evening in Dr. Morris Park, Tipperary overcame Waterford by 0-10 to 0-8. Tipperary led by 0-4 to 0-2 at the interval. MCGRATH CUP FOOTBALL
Limerick will play Cork in the McGrath Cup Final on Sunday next. Limerick defeated UCC in the semi-final last Sunday by 0-9 to 0-6. Brian Mulvihill (Moyle Rovers) lined out at corner-forward for UCC, scoring two points.
KEHOE CUP HURLING
Athlone IT defeated Trinity College Dublin (TCD) by 2-18 to 2-11 in the Kehoe Cup hurling competition on Sunday. Kevin Cosgrove (Ballina) and Brendan Duggan (Thurles Sarsfields) lined out in the forward line for TCD while Cormac Spooner (Borris-Ileigh) is a member of the TCD panel.
SCOR NA NOG MUNSTER SEMI-FINAL
Well done to the Tipperary champions in Scor na nOg, all of whom have qualified for the Munster Scor na nOg final following last Sunday's Munster semi-final in Cappamore. The final will take place in Mallow on Sunday, February 4th at 2:00pm. This will be all ticket event. Tipperary will be represented in each category by the following - Figure Dancing - Newcastle; Solo Song - Marie Floyd, Newport; Instrumental Music - Newport; Recitation - Martin Lee, JK Brackens; Ballad Group - Borris-Ileigh; Question Time - Borris-Ileigh; Novelty Act - Borris-Ileigh; Set Dancing - JK Brackens.
DEVELOPMENT GRANTS
The question of "where does the money go" is often asked of GAA officials. Recently, the Munster Council approved the allocation of 1,600,000 euro to fund county and club development works in the province in 2006. The Central Council allocated a total of 540,000 euro for clubs in Munster. These funds were allocated towards the purchase of grounds, or the development of existing grounds for items such as floodlighting, erection of new stands, pitch development, dressing rooms and goal posts to name but a few.
With regard to Tipperary, a total of 269,609 euro in grants courtesy of the Munster Council and Central Council were allocated at the January meeting of the County Board by the Tipperary Development Committee led by County Development Officer James O'Donnell. The allocation is divided among 23 Tipperary clubs, 3 Tipperary schools and Dr. Morris Park Thurles. The full list of grants for 2006 is as follows -
Rockwell Rovers (16,776 for Development), Ballylooby-Castlegrace (13,873 for Development and 13,000 for Purchase), Ballinahinch (9,378 for Development), Boherlahan-Dualla (2,608 for Development), Cashel King Cormacs (1,270 for Sanding), Newcastle (826 for Sanding), Carrick Swan (8,057 for Development), Kilsheelan-Kilcash (1,270 for Sanding), Clonakenny (6,622 for Development), Clonoulty-Rossmore (15,902 for Development), Aherlow (3,948 for Development), Eire Og Annacarty (3,948 for Development), Arravale Rovers (14,036 for Development), Galtee Rovers (8,750 for Purchase and 14,306 for Development), Moyle Rovers (13,104 for Development), Lattin-Cullen (9.737 for Development), Moycarkey-Borris (14,592 for Development), Holycross-Ballycahill (13,000 for Purchase and 13,721 for Development), JK Brackens (1,571 for Development), Sean Treacys (13,104 for Development), Templederry (21,706 for Development), Newport (2,759 for Development and 1,270 for Sanding). Three schools received grants as follows - Colaiste Phobal Roscre (1,681 for Development), Lisronagh N.S. (4,725 for Purchase), St. Thomas the Apostle N.S. Rosegreen (1,367 for Development). Finally, Dr. Morris Park received 13,458 for Floodlighting.
SUMMER CAMPS 2007
Clubs should note the following regulations which will apply to the VHI Cúl Camps in Tipperary for 2007 - 1. Clubs wishing to host camps must submit the name and contact details of the Club Co-ordinator to the County Co-ordinator, Dinny Maher by end January. 2. Orders for gear must be with Dinny Maher by the end of February. 3. There will be an extra premium of €5 per outfit on late orders. 4. Clubs will collect and pay for gear immediately on delivery to the county in mid June. 5. €55 will again be the cost per participant to cover gear, coaches and equipment. 6. Gear will consist of Jersey (Green & White Irish international style), togs, socks and kit bag.
REFEREES
The Annual General Meeting of the South Tipperary referees committee took place on Wednesday, January 17th. The following officers were elected - Chairman: Seamus Roche (Kilsheelan-Kilcash); Secretary: Brian Tyrell (St. Marys Clonmel); Treasurer: Victor Direen (Mullinahone). Referees are asked to note that training will take place in Monroe at 7:30pm on Thursday, January 25th. Membership is also due and can be paid to the Treasurer.
ROSCREA SPORTS AWARDS
The 9th annual Roscrea sports awards will take place in Roscrea's Racket Hall on Saturday evening, February 10th. There are five GAA winners among the 14 categories and are as follows - Hurling: Liam Sheedy and Joey McLoughney; Gaelic Football: David Buckley; Camogie: The Harps Camogie club, Cullahill, Laois; Handball: Diarmuid Nash, Scariff and Cistercian College Roscrea. The Hall of Fame recipient is Fintan "Finty" Kealy from Borris-in-Ossory with whom he won County Senior Hurling medals in the 1950's as well as a National League Medal with Laois in 1960.
SUPPORTERS CLUB NIGHT OF LEGENDS
On Saturday February 10th, the eve of the Ireland vs. France rugby game in Croke Park, the Tipperary Supporters Club will hold a night of Legends in the Burlington Hotel Dublin. Guests on the night will include living stars from the Tipperary Triple Crown winning teams of 49/50/51, plus the Mayo 50/51 teams, plus the Irish Rugby Triple Crown team of '51. Proceeds in aid of the Tipperary Supporters Club and a Charity Trust which Alice Leahy from Fethard is involved and who's organisation operate a shelter in the Liberties providing food clothing and medical care for homeless people. Micheal O Muircearthaigh will be M.C. on the night and Red Hurley will provide the musical entertainment. MAURICE DAVIN ANNIVERSARY
The GAA Museum will commemorate the 80th Anniversary of the death of Maurice Davin with an evening event in Croke Park on Tuesday, January 30th at 7:00pm. The event entitled Maurice Davin - The First President will mark the 80th anniversary of the death of one of the founders of the GAA, a world class athlete as well as the man who served as the association's first president. Today his memory lives on in Croke Park with the renaming of the Canal Stand to the Davin Stand in April 2006. To mark the occasion Dr. Paul Rouse (UCD) will give a talk on Davin and his contribution to the formative years of the G.A.A. The event will also include a special floodlit tour of Croke Park incorporating the Davin Stand. Tickets priced at €10 (adult), €8 (concession) are available to purchase from the GAA Museum, Croke Park (01-8192361). Early booking is advised.
SOUTH EAST GAA COACHING WORKSHOP
A GAA coaching workshop will take place in Waterford Institute of Technology on Saturday, February 3rd from 9:30am to 5:30pm. The workshop includes high practical content for coaches involved with club or county squads. There will be presentations from four All-Ireland winning team coaches, namely -
- Brian Cody - Managing a Successful Competitive Team
- Pat Flanagan - Reaching physical fitness targets through skill practice - the practical way forward
- Fiona O'Driscoll - Variety coaching methods - How to challenge your players
- Eamon Ryan (Cork) - Simplify your Coaching Sessions to maximise your Teams / Players Potential.
The workshop will also include presentations from leading experts such as
- Jim Kilty - Fitness for Gaelic Games - Addressing every players need - Energise your coaching sessions
- Paudie Butler - Take your player's skill to the next level - the easy way
- Gerry Fitzpatrick - Motivating techniques for your players - Modern psychology for the modern game.
