November 17, 2003
Portumna.........0-17
Athleague..........0-5
Galway champions Portumna completed a memorable year when they easily accounted for Athleague in a one-sided Connacht club hurling final at the Roscommon champions' home ground on Sunday, November 16.
Displaying greater fitness and stickwork, Portumna had three points on the board before Kevin Regan opened Athleague's account in the seventh minute. Three unanswered points from Francis Canning (two) and David Canning extended the visitors' lead to 0-6 to 0-2 after 15 minutes. Points from Padraig Cuddy and Alan Cunniffe kept Athleague in touch before a flurry of scores from Niall Hayes and Ivan Muldoon eased Portumna into a 0-11 to 0-3 lead at the break.
Tom Reddington reduced the deficit on the restart, but Portumna continued to pick off their points with the Canning and Hayes brothers to the fore. In the final quarter, they registered five points without reply to copperfasten victory.
