THE 1988 ULSTER SFC FINAL.
Monaghan 1-10, Tyrone 0-11.
Monaghan eventually held out for victory in this hard fought and at times bruising Ulster senior football championship final that was played in Clones on Sunday July 17th 1988. It was a game too that ended in somewhat controversial circumstances as Tyrone claimed that they were denied a cast iron penalty and there was an element of controversy too surrounding Eamonn McEnaney's goal in the first-half. Overall though Monaghan deserved their victory in that they started out in very determined mood and always seemed to have the measure of the Tyrone men although they fought to the bitter end.
In the Ulster Championship, including the final, it is worth noting that Monaghan scored a total of 2 goals and 37 points and conceded 34 points. Monaghan's total was made up as follows : Eugene Hughes, Eamonn McEnaney 1-8 each, Eamonn Murphy, R. McCarron 0-4 each, Gerry Mc Carville, David Byrne, Owen Hamilton 0-3 each, Bernie Murray 0-2, Ciaran Murray, Stefan White 0-1 each: making a total of ten players contributing to that total of 2-37 over 3 games.
