U21 get the better of Tyrone

March 14, 2013
SHAMROCK CUP U21 TOURNAMENT FINAL. (6/3/2013)
Monaghan 4-9
Tyrone 0-6

A sharper, hungrier Monaghan got the better of Tyrone in the final of the Shamrock Cup at the third time of asking when they proved too potent for the O'Neill men in Emyvale last night. Monaghan and Tyrone were contesting their third final on the trot and Monaghan had lot the previous two but got a measure of revenge last night
Conditions on the night were difficult with rain falling throughout and this did contribute to mistakes by both sides although a touch of over elaboration also led to good outfield endeavour not producing the result it might have at times.

Monaghan by and large dominated the first half with Pete Dooney winning a lot ofg possession in midfield and always using it to good effect while Daniel McKenna, Paraic Graham and Shane Carey posed numerous problems for Tyrone. Monaghan led at half time by 3-3 to 0-4, the goals by Daniel McKenna in the 11th minute, Shane O'Brien in the 23rd minute and Stephen Sherry in the 27th minute.

In the second half Monaghan continuds to dominate with strong defensive work by Johnny McGuigan and Conor Boyle in particular while the introduction of Keith McEnaney for the second half gave them extra momentum in attack. By the end of the third quarter they had extended their lead to 13 points with a 4th goal by Keith McEnaney in the 15th minute more or less assuring victory. Tyrone continued to plug away but they simply could find no way through and repeatedly ran into heavy traffic in the Monaghan back division.
