One of the favourites for this years Intermediate hurling championship, Blackhall Gaels, claimed the Meath Hurling League division 2 hurling league title with a two point win over a strong Kiltale outfit. The game was played in ideal conditions on a perfect sod at St Lomans Park Trim.
Blackhall Gaels 2-11
Kiltale 2-9
Kiltale got a great start when the ever reliable PJ Walsh pointed. Soon after the recently retuned from Australia Cillian O'Sullivan followed this up with the games first goal and the boys in Maroon and Green where four points to the good. Johnny Meyler got Blackhall off the mark and two further scores from Dermot and Dan Carty left one it at the halfway stage. Kiltale increased their lead through Walsh before Blackhall went on to dominate the remaining ten minutes. Dermot Carty pointed before Meyler blitzed Kiltale with 1-2 within five minutes. The goal was created by good work from corner forward Kevin Coyle. Blackhall led at the break 1-6 to 1-2.
Meyler was a tour de force for the eventual winners in the second half. The county hurler got all of Blackhall's second half tally. The number 14 and O'Sullivan traded points before his twenty one yard free was deflected to the Kiltale net and the Gaels were six points ahead. Cathal Sheridan found the Blackhall net and the margin was down to four, 2-8 to 2-4 midway through the half. Meyler stretched the Blackhall advantage with two points before Kiltale staged a late rally. Eamonn Ryan (2)l and Sheridan from frees had the gap down to three. Meyler added his ninth score to leave it 2-11 to 2-7 before points from Walsh and Sheridan cut the lead to two with time up.
After the game Dom Reilly, Hurling Board Chairman, presented the Division 2 Hurling League Cup to Blackhall captain Tom Delaney.
