SHC semi-final: Killyon shake off Trim in extra time

October 10, 2016

Killyon's Adam Flanagan closes in on Trim's Alan Douglas during the Meath Senior Hurling Championship semi final at Pairc Tailteann.

Killyon responded well to Trim's rally to advance to a Ted Murtagh SHC final meeting with Kiltale.

Killyon  2-20  Trim 1-16 after extra time

Often the team that forces extra time carries that momentum into the additional 20 minutes. It didn't happen here.

Killyon were the dominant team in ordinary time. However, they were let down by some poor shooting in the final quarter leaving the door open for Trim.

Points from Sean McGee and James Toher (free) left it 1-12-each after the hour.

Retaking the lead with a Keith Keoghan 65 within two minutes of the start of extra time, Kiltale bossed matters for most of the additional 20 mintues.

Even when Trim regained the lead at the start of the second-half of extra time (from a James Toher free), 1-16 to 1-15, Killyon closed out with an unanswered 1-5.

Scores were tied three times in extra time, before Killyon - who won the round robin meeting between the sides by one point - finished with a flourish.

As Trim endeavoured to prolong their campaign, gaps appeared in their rearguard and sub Adam Farrell netted Killyon's second goal (the last score of the game) seconds after Trim's Alan Douglas saw his goal attempt rebound off a post at the town end.

The sides exchanged points in the opening minute with Trim's Ciaran Joyce responding to Stefan Kelly's opener, which was posted at the town end inside 15 seconds.

The first of Keith Keoghan's four pointed first-half frees put Killyon back in front, it went over off an upright.

Then in the eighth minute came one of the talking points of the half, when James Toher's long range was deemed to have crossed the line - off two defenders - by the umpries who were onhand to make the call.

That left it 1-1 to 0-2 after eight minutes. There they remained until the 23rd minute when a Keith Keoghan free tied the scores for the second time, 0-5 to 1-2.

Seconds later Ray Massey goaled for Killyon to earn them a lead that carried them to stoppage time at the end of hour.

Killyon took that lead to stoppage time at the of normal time. They went on to lead by 1-6 to 1-4 at the interval.

All through the second-half of an ordinary hour, Killyon looked the more likely winners but Trim were always within range.
