Ballyhaunis, Tooreen & Westport win
August 05, 2008
Round 3 of the Mayo Senior Hurling Championship took place last Sunday with all six sides in action.
The tie of the round saw defending champions Ballina James Stephens hosting Tooreen, with Tooreen coming out on top on a 2-12 to 1-8 scoreline. Two Tooreen second half goals in the space of a minute from Kenneth Robinson and Martin Devaney, gave the East Mayo charges the edge in what was a physical battle throughout. Ballina's John Tighe got his sides major in the first half, while Vinny O'Hora (Ballina) and Sean Ganley (Tooreen) both received their marching orders ten minutes from time. Tooreen's Adrian Freeman was in top form again shooting eight points in total over the hour.
Ballyhaunis hosted Castlebar Mitchel's in what was a top against bottom pairing in the current Senior Hurling Championship table.
This game went to form with Ballyhaunis running out 1-26 to 0-9 comfortable winners. Niall Murphy bagged 1-10 for Ballyhaunis while Keith Higgins was held in reserve after Mayo's football outing against Tyrone twenty-four hours earlier.
The final tie of the round saw Belmullet travel to Westport, with little success however as the Covies came away victors on a 2-12 to 1-9 scoreline.
Round 4 of the Championship takes place next Sunday 10th August with all games throwing in at 3pm.
