Ahane club notes
October 12, 2009
Ahane G.A.A. Club lost one of it's great hurlers this week with the death of Paddy Enright, Mulcair Drive, Annacotty. Paddy won his last County Senior Hurling Championship with Ahane in 1955. Playing full-back with Limerick, he also won a Munster Senior Hurling Championship medal in 1955. We extend our sympathy to his wife, Kathleen, sons Pa & Ger, daughter Mary, daughters-in-law, Angie and Ann and his grandchildren.
Ahane Ladies football team won the County Junior Championship title last weekend with a super victory against Feohanagh/Castlemahon on a scoreline of 4-13 to 5-6. It was an evenly contested game in the first half and points from Niamh Power (1), Niamh Mulcahy (3) and Michelle Quigley (3-1) had both teams on 3-5 at half-time. With some really great displays of football from the Ahane girls in the second half and further scores from Niamh Mulcahy (5), Amy Ryan (1), Ann Kennedy (1-0), Michelle Quigley (2), ensured a 4 point victory for Ahane. Final Score Ahane 4-13, Feoghanagh/Castlemahon 5-6. Great credit is due to Carmel Power and Pat Quigley for putting in the hard work to get this team up and running early in the year to compete in the Junior Novice League which they won and thanks to Billy Connolly for subsequently assisting with coaching to bring this team their first County Championship title. Team: Grainne Harrahill, Tara Cannon, Karen Murphy, Marie Power, Sarah Crotty, Niamh Mulcahy, Edel Quigley, Judith Mulcahy, Michelle Quigley, Sarah Morrissey, Niamh Power, Laura Byrnes, Ann Kennedy, Amy Ryan, Sinead Greaney. Subs: Lorraine Quigley, Claire Mulcahy, Martina Collins, Sarah Joyce Power, Fiona Quirke, Louise Rennisson, Laura O'Connor, Mary O'Connor.
Ollie Moran has last week announced his retirement from inter-county hurling. On behalf of everyone associated with Ahane G.A.A., I would like to thank Ollie for representing Ahane in such a sporting manner each and every time he donned the Limerick Jersey. After a superb year in 2007, Ollie was awarded an All-Star, a first both for himself and Ahane G.A.A. Club. Ollie certainly is the Pride of the Parish. Looking forward to seeing you, Ollie, at Mackey Park in the Ahane jersey for many years to come.
Ahane will host the Guinness Hurling Cubed games in Mackey Park on Friday night 23rd October and Saturday, 24th October, 2009 in Mackey Park. Briefly, the games consist of two teams of 3 players, playing for 3 minutes or scoring 3 goals whichever is the sooner. The Cube is an 11 x 14 metre re-inforced perspex cage which will be erected on the grounds. Five other Clubs have been invited to take part, each Club bringing 6 teams of 3 players. The games (restricted to over 18s) will be run off on Friday night and Saturday finishing with music in the bar on Saturday night. Further details regarding times, teams, etc. available next week.
