Limerick G.A.A. Saddened

Limerick G.A.A. was saddened last evening when the news of the death of Tony Herbert hit Limerick. Tony was a member of a great G.A.A. Family. Tony and his Brothers Mick and Sean played senior hurling for Limerick. Tony Played in the 1940 All Ireland senior hurling final when Limerick were victorious. Tony won numerous Limerick county senior hurling medals with Ahane. After the 1943 County final when Ahane defeated Croom Tony joined Dublin club Faughs and won Dublin senior county medals. Tony had moved to Dublin to work and was to spend the rest of his life in Dublin. The victorious Ahane 1943 team was goalie Paddy Byrnes, Tom Conway, Mick Hickey, Phil Byrnes, Tony Herbert, Jacky Power, Paddy Kelly, Timmy Ryan, Pat O Shea, John Mackey, Mick Mackey, Séan Herbert, Mick O Grady, Paddy McMahon and Ger Fitzgibbon. On June 16th 1940 a youthful Tony Herbert lined out at midfield for Limerick partnering the imperious Timmy Ryan. in the Munster final in when Limerick met Cork in Thurles the game ended in a draw and Limerick went on to win the replay.The Limerick team on that day was Paddy McMahon, Mick Hickey, Jim Roche, Paddy Scanlon, Mick Mackey, Paddy Clohessey, Jim McCarthy, Tony Herbert, Dick Stokes, Jacky Power, Peter Cregan, John Mackey, Timmy Ryan, Mick Kennedy and Tommy Cooke.
Tony Herbert gave outstanding displays for Limerick C.B.S. in a trilling Dr. Harty Cup final only to suffer a narrow defeat to North Monastery. He was selected at centre field on the Munster Colleges hurling team partnered by Dick Stokes (Doon C.B.S.). Tony played senior hurling for Dublin for a number of years winning Leinster senior hurling medals in 1948 and 1952. He played in 1948 and 1952 All Ireland senior hurling finals for Dublin. A teammate on the 1952 team was Roger McCarthy from Cappamore a teammate on the 1948 team was the legendary Séan Og Ceallacháin although domiciled in Dublin for many years Tony attended many games in Limerick. He was delighted to see his nephews play senior hurling for Limerick. Tony was a member of Seanad Eireann for some years.
