Delaney bidding to relaunch career
July 15, 2005
Former Kilkenny forward PJ Delaney is aiming to relaunch his hurling career nearly six years after he suffered horrific head injuries in a brutal assault outside a Thurles nightclub.
The assault took place just a week after he came on as a substitute in Kilkennyís All-Ireland final defeat to Cork and left him clinging on to life as his parents Pat, the former Kilkenny star, mother Eileen and girlfriend Sarah King kept a constant vigil by his beside in Cork University Hospital.
ìEven today I canít remember anything from that night or of the six to eight months before that. I donít even remember the All-Ireland final or any part of the championship. But I am sure that period canít have been an easy time for my family, friends and so on,î said Delaney, who scored the clinching goal in Kilkennyís All-Ireland final victory over Galway in 1993.
PJ recently received the all-clear from doctors to resume his playing career with his club Fenians and has already played two matches at junior level against Carlow Town and St. Martinís. He was togged out for the recent senior clash with Glenmore, but didnít sample the action.
ìI am a bit apprehensive,î he admitted.
ìThat is a natural thing every time you go out to play. But I am not afraid or anything. To play at senior level with the club is something I would love to do.î
