SHC: Gaels edge by Dunnamaggin
October 02, 2009
O'Loughlin Gaels 1-16
Dunnamaggin 1-14
O'Loughlin Gaels only had two points to spare as they edged by Dunnamaggin and into the last four of the Kilkenny SHC last Saturday at Thomastown.
The Gaels had got off to a decent start here when Niall McEvoy's clearance from defence found Danny Loughnane, who sent Paul Kelly through on goal with a hand-pass from where the corner-forward made no mistake in rattling the Dunnamaggin net.
To their credit, Dunnamaggin recovered well after that and started to play some effective hurling, as Colin Herity, Kenny Moore and JJ Dunphy made it count on the scoreboard. It was the Gaels though that finished stronger before the half was out, with Mark Bergin and Marin Comerford sending over accurate efforts to give their side a 1-9 to 0-6 lead at the break.
Dunnamaggin raced out of the traps for the second-half and struck points via Herity (2), Dunphy and Andrew Hickey to bring the deficit down with just over a quarter of an hour remaining.
The city outfit looked to on the ropes, but they displayed their true character in the closing ten minutes when Bergin and Comerford hit the forefront, and were backed up by Brian Dowling.
Dunnamaggin did pull back a penalty through their goalkeeper, David Herity, but O'Loughlin Gaels had the firepower to hold out and advance through to the last four of the competition.
