Last weekend was a bonanza weekend of football for Kerry ladies with no less than 4 finals in 24 hours. First to throw in on Saturday at 1pm in Beaufort was the Educate.ie U14 Div 1 Final between Cromane & Miltown/Listry. Milltown Listry got off to a great start with Ella Teahan getting the first goal but then Cromane powered back into the game to leave the half time score Milltown/Listry 2 -04 to Cromane 4-07. Credit to Miltown/Listry they fought back & in the dying minutes with Cromane ahead by a goal, Mairéad Lehane scored a goal to bring the game to a draw. Full time score in normal time Milltown/Listry 4 -11 points to Cromane 5 -08. In extra time Cromane again took control & this time they made no mistake about it & ensured they kept Miltown/Listry at arm's length. Final score Cromane 7-11 Milltown/Listry 4- 14 points. In wet conditions both teams played a fast flowing brand of football and gave the large crowd great entertainment. Cromane Capt Ailbhe Clifford accepted the title from Kerry Ladies Chairperson Paddy White on behalf of sponsor Educate.ie.
Next up as part of a double billing was the Randles Bros Nissan Dealers Junior C Final between Currow & Daingean Ui Chuis at 4pm in Keel. Currow on winning the toss elected to play with the strong wind in the first half & made great use with a good start with 2 quick points. Louise Nelligan bagged the first goal of the game as she finished a fantastic passing move to the net. Daingean Ui Chuis brought themselves more into the game and began to dominate and scored the next 2 points, but the Currow mentors were alert t to the problems the West Kerry side posed & made positional changes which totally changed the flow of the game. Catherine and Roisin Daly took control of Midfield and Sheonagh and Margo Brosnan totally disrupted the Dingle Kick Out, and with Colleen Breen winning a huge amount of ball at full forward and running at the Dingle defence, the scores began to come for Currow with Roisin Daly (3), Noelle Scanlon (4), and Aoife Walsh all kicking Points before Louise Nelligan went on a darting run through the Dingle defence with 5 minutes to go to score a second goal. Half time score Currow 2-08 Daingean Ui Chuis 0-06. Despite playing against the wind for the second half it was the Currow girls that got the first score a point from a free. However this served as a wakeup call for the West Kerry side who began to get on top again and went on a scoring spree adding 6 points without reply, trailing by only 3 points with 15 minutes still to go in the game. Currow then had midfielder Catherine Cronin sin binned for 10 minutes for a yellow card offence. But the Currow defence were resolute in their tackling with Kerrie McCarthy being the lynchpin as she kept the shackles on Aoife Geaney, ably assisted by Pataire Fleming and Maggie O'Sullivan. Daingean Ui Chuis thought they had found the elusive goal only for Leona McEnery to pull off a wonderful save. Catherine Cronin soon returned to action from her sin binning & Currow took control again & closed out the game adding 2 points to seal the win. Captain Louise Nelligan accepted the title from Nora Fealy Vice Chairperson Kerry Ladies on behalf of sponsor Randles Bros Nissan. Final score Currow 2-11 Daingean Ui Chuis 0-14. Currow team and scorers: Leona McEnery, Maggie O'Sullivan, Kerri McCarthy, Pataire Fleming, Sheonagh Fleming, Siobhain Fleming, Fiona Nelligan McGuire, Roisin Daly (0-03), Emir O'Shea, Catherine Cronin, Margo Brosnan, Noelle Scanlon (0-05- 0-02F), Louise Nelligan (2-00), Colleen Breen, Aoife Walsh (0-02), Rebecca Lyons, Hazel McCarthy, Aisling O'Sullivan, Aisling Geaney. Corca Dhuibhne & Dr Crokes followed next in the Randles Bros Nissan Dealers Junior A Final at 6pm with the winner representing Kerry Ladies in the Munster Club Championship. Corca Dhuibhne were defeated finalists last year & this year would make no mistake. Corca Dhuibhne were always in control of the game & with county members Eilish Kavanagh & Louise Ni Mhuircheartaigh in imperious form it was always going to be difficult for the Killarney side. But the Crokes side did defend well & Rehanne O'Shea up front was constantly making good runs for ball to assist her defence. Corca Dhuibhne laid down their marker early with some well taken points & were then in for an early goal from Katie Ni Mhuircheartaigh. Crokes did come back with a goal of their own but were struggling to get the ball past the halfway line. Corca Dhuibhne closed out the first half with another goal from Brid Sears, county panellist and with some frees from Louise. Half time score Corca Dhuibhne 2-07 Dr Crokes 1-03. In the second half the West Kerry side with last year in the back of the mind closed out the game in the early stages of the second half with some wonderful passing and movement off the ball by their forwards resulting in some wonderful scores, while their defence tightened up conceding only 4 points in the second half. Final score Corca Dhuibhne 2-18 Dr Crokes 1-07. Capt Aoife Ni Chiobhain accepted the title from Vice Chairperson Nora Fealy on behalf of sponsors Randles Bros Nissan Dealers. Next weekend sees the Randles Bros Senior Championship Final between Castleisland Desmonds & Spa/Rathmore. Desmonds defeated Southern Gaels in wet & windy Caherciveen on Sunday which featured a sin bin for Southern Gaels & a penalty against them also. In the end after a tough competitive game Desmonds came through. The Castleisland side who are missing players from last year's All Ireland winning Intermediate Club team will be hoping to add the senior title to their collection & can count on the services of players such as Cait Lynch, Lorraine Scanlon & Leanne Mangan. The opposition who defeated Inbhear Sceine Gaels will be looking to players such as Aislinn Desmond, Cassandra Buckley & many underage county players to pull them through. However the experience the Castleisland side have should see them through. Details on venue & time etc to be confirmed later in the week.
