Meagher Cup: Wins for Tyrone and Fermanagh
May 05, 2012
Tyrone and Fermanagh made winning starts to their Lory Meagher Cup campaigns thanks to victories over Leitrim and Longford respectively.
In Ballinamore, Tyrone thrashed Leitrim 4-22 to 1-6 after just six points had separated the sides at half-time. Damien Casey got the visitors off to a great start when he netted in the 12th minute and further scores from Casey, Conor Grogan, Aidy and Justin Kelly helped them to a 1-8 to 1-2 interval lead.
Leitrim, who would have been further behind at half-time but for some wasteful Tyrone finishing (they hit 12 wides in the opening half), faded out of the game completely in the second period as goals from Grogan, Shea McKeever and Sheamus O'Hagan ensured a facile win for the Red Hands.
Fermanagh made it an Ulster double when they cruised to a 1-19 to 1-8 victory over Longford at Brewster Park. Having failed to field a team for their scheduled Allianz Hurling League meeting with the Ernemen earlier this year, Longford had 24 players available on this occasion, but struggled from the off as the impressive Ryan Bogue helped the home side to a 0-9 to 0-5 lead at the break.
The Division 3B champions increased their advantage on the restart thanks to a John Paul McGarry goal and they ran out comfortable winners, despite Eoin Donnellan finding the net for the midlanders from a 20-metre free.
