Question for Mayo history buffs & GAA Bettors

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Looking at Mayos six defeats in the All Ireland final was wondering can anybody recall the betting odds for Mayo in 96 v Meath, 97 v Kerry and 89 v Cork

I know they were 7/4-2/1 last season v Donegal
They were 5/2 v Kerry in 06
They were 13/8 v Kerry in 04

Question I'm getting at is: Have they ever been favourites for any of those other 3 All Irelands
I'd assume they were underdogs in all 3 from the betting front but can anybodys mind cast that far back

PS. I'll get this one in as well before Sunday assuming Kerry beat Dublin.

When was the last time Mayo beat Kerry in the championship?

Cork were definitely favourites in 89 as Cork had lost the 87 & 88 finals to Meath. I'd imagine Meath were favourites in 1996 as they'd got out of Leinster where Dublin had been the All-Ireland champions.

1997 is the one I think Mayo might have been favourites. Kerry had been in All-Ireland wilderness for 11 years so Mayo may have been favourites for that on. Pat Holmes, Maurice Fitz, the rest is history.

I can't recall the odds but I do believe Mayo were slight favourites in 97 . They could have won in 97 but 96 was the one that got away as far as Mayo were concerned. In all the other finals they were beaten by the better team.

The last time Mayo beat kerry in the championship was the all Ireland semi final in 1996. I think they won that game by 3 points. Meath beat Cavan in the same year, and Meath and Mayo met in the final which went to the replay that was made famous for the fight in the first half!

May have been favourites in 97. In 96 not sure if they briefly went favourites prior to the Meath Tyrone semi.

However, there is every chance that the winners of next week end will be favourites by the time the final comes around. This is very likely to be the case if for example either team had a big win.

thats what I was thinking. 97 they'd just made final previous year, could/should have won. They must have been fairly well backed to go one better.

Could have shades of that this year in the final

PS I think Mayo may not even go off favs for the final. If its Dublin, think bettingwise it will be Evens both sides

96 I believe

Barnowl is correct, 96 we let slip, although too much is made of it I believe, as we just didnt get the luck on the day. 97 the finest footballer of all time was the defining factor. 04 and 06 we had probably over-achieved in reaching the final and were facing a great kerry side, especially in 06, that was a fantastic side. Last year we were deserving of a final place but donegal were better on the day and probably had the bit of luck also. As for the odds, it is a gambler that will remember them, not a football fan.

Don't know the odds but Mayo were def underdogs for 89, 96, 04, 06 & 2012. 97 may have been different but can't remember.

The last time mayo beat Kerry was in 96 Semi final by 6 points I think. The most memorable thing from that game was James Horans goal. The Kerry goal keeper kicked the ball out straight to Horan who was standing on the 45, Horan caught it and sent it straight back in over the keepers head into the net.

meath beat Tyrone in the other SF that year, cavnan didn't get there until 97 when they were beaten by Kerry

Dont forget James Nallens goal that day also. Madden still watching it on the big screen when Mayo conceeded the other end

I doubt Meath could have beaten Cavan in 96 as Cavan's 1997 Uslter final win was their first in ages?

Since 1989 (24 years ago and including this years finals) Mayo have been in 7 Senior Finals and 7 Minor Finals. That 14 Finals in 24 years. Mayo have been represented as a county in just over half of all the finals on All Ireland day in the past 24 years.

You can look at that record in two ways 1) Great record in getting to finals 2) What a pathetic return. We have also lost 3 u-21 finals in that time, winning our only one in that period against Cork in 2006.

Christ I don't know could I take another All Ireland horror story - come on Mayo time to smash this record to pieces. I feel if we could win one, we could win a few as if to break through that glass ceiling that that kept us away from the winners table all those years.

U are dead right, I made a mistake. It was Meath v Tyrone, the game made famous for Peter Canavan getting taken out of it in the first half.

He is prob right....don't think Galway have ever been favouritese either (Kildare 98, Kerry 2000, Meath 2001) - its just the way with Connacht teams.

duncanknows125 - Have lost semi finals in 85, 92, 93, 99, 2011 of the top of my head. Mayo went through much of the 60's and 7-'s without winning a Connacht title, in fact I don't think Mayo won any Connacht Title in the 70's - things began to change in the late 80's and really took off when John Maughan took over but we have not been able to bridge the gap and actually win sam.

Mayo lost semi in 81 vs. Kerry.....All Connacht teams sucked in the 70's and 80's even Ulster were like that

In the 26 years between 1955 and 1981 Mayo won two Connacht titles in 1967 and 1969. Changed times.
